Local Notes: Sharon wins Lady Captain's Prize at Ballinrobe Golf Club

Congratulations to Ballinrobe Golf Club’s JB Carr Team which recently defeated Roscommon to qualify for the All-Ireland competition, which will be held in Woodenbridge Golf Club, Co Wicklow, at the end of August.

Ballinrobe Musical Society auditions

Ballinrobe Musical Society will be holding auditions for its 2025 production of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ in Ballinrobe Parish Centre, on Sunday, September 15. Application forms are available on any of the society's social media pages and can also be obtained by emailing ballinrobemusicsociety@gmail.com.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be staged in Ballinrobe Community School from February 16th to 22nd, 2025.

New members are welcome.

Ballinrobe Town AFC 

Last Tuesday evening, Ballinrobe Town AFC's under-12 girls’ (A) team faced Ballyvary Blue Bombers, at The Green and a very entertaining and competitive encounter ended in a 2-2 draw.

The goal scorers for Ballinrobe on the day were Faith O’Gorman and Emily Ryan.

Well done to all involved.

Under-16 Boys Division 3 (A): In what was a highly competitive fixture, the Ballinrobe Town (B) under-16 boys’ team recently recorded a terrific 2-1 victory against Ballina Town (B), at the Green.

Ballinrobe led 2-0 at the interval, courtesy of goals from Luke Sheridan and Jayden McNamara (penalty).

Ballina produced a spirited performance during the second half, but Ballinrobe defended diligently and the Red and White held on to claim the spoils.

Local derby

Following their thrilling 1-12 to 0-15 draw away to Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin in the opening round of the Mayo Intermediate Championship, Ballinrobe will have home advantage in round two when they welcome Kilmaine to Flanagan Park next Friday night, August 30. 

This eagerly awaited South Mayo derby clash is set to throw in at 8pm and will be live on Mayo GAA TV.

Kilmaine currently sit top of Group Three after their impressive 1-18 to 1-12 victory against Kiltane in round one.

There is sure to be a large attendance at the South Mayo venue for this clash and your support for the Maroon and Yellow would be appreciated.

Ballinrobe GAA Lotto

There was no winner of the €24,400 lotto jackpot draw in the Ballinrobe GAA Lotto draw, which was held in Fitzpatrick’s Bar on Monday, August 19. The numbers drawn were 6, 17, 20 and 29.

The €25 winners were Paddy and Marilyn McTigue and Gerry Moran.

The Neale GAA News

There was no winner of the €6,300 jackpot in The Neale's lotto draw which was held in Lydon’s Lodge, on Tuesday, August 20. The numbers drawn were 3, 11, 23 and 27.

The €30 winners were Margaret Gorman and Mark Costello.

The €25 winners were Ann Mellette and Aine O’Grady.

Following their disappointing loss away to Ardnaree Sarsfields in the first round of the Mayo Intermediate Championship, The Neale will be hoping to get back to winning ways in round two when they host Burrishoole in Cong. This fixture will take place next Saturday, August 31, and will throw-in at 5.30pm.

Garrymore GAA Club News

There was no winner of the €17,600 lotto jackpot draw which was held in the Garrymore Complex on Sunday, August 18. The numbers drawn were 7, 16, 22 and 34.

The €50 winners were David Connolly, Davros; James Flynn, Killeenrevagh; and Kathleen Killeen, Cahir.

Garrymore are back in Mayo Senior Championship action next weekend when they welcome Castlebar Mitchels to the Garrymore GAA Grounds. This blockbuster tie will take place on Saturday, August 31, and will throw in at 8pm. The game will also be live on Mayo GAA TV.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club News

Congratulations to Amy Horan who was the lucky winner of €325 in the club’s 50/50 draw. The draw took place in O’Hare’s Bar, Cornmarket, on Sunday, August 18.

Aidan Golden Memorial Cup 

Ballinrobe Rugby Club would like to thank everyone who supported the Aidan Golden Memorial Cup, which was held in The Green, on Saturday, August 10.

All proceeds raised from the event will go to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) Ireland.

This was a tag rugby event, and after some great competition on the day, ‘The Redeem Team’ were the winners.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club would like to thank all the volunteers on the day and everyone who sponsored items for the event, and thanks must also go to Kenneth Loughrey and Ian Place for refereeing the games.

Finally, a special word of thanks goes to Diggers Foods for their support in providing food for the barbeque.

Afterwards, a celebratory night was held in Fitzpatrick's Bar.

Men’s Shed 

The Ballinrobe Men’s Shed will resume its activities after the summer break on Tuesday, September 3, at 10am.

The Men’s Shed group meets every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 10am to 12.30pm, in the building adjacent to the Water Towers, Kilmaine Road, (Eircode F31 XK09).

This group is open to men aged 18 and over, with new members welcome. A range of activities take place including music, woodwork, pottery, gardening, and is also open to men who just want to call in for a chat and a cup of tea/coffee.

Ballinrobe Women’s Shed 

The Ballinrobe Women’s Shed returns after the summer break next Monday, September 2, from 11am to 1pm.

The group meets every Monday in the building adjacent to the Water Towers, Kilmaine Road, (Eircode F31 XK09). The group is open to women aged 18 and over. Those taking part can share their skills and talents, have a chat, and a cup of tea/coffee. New members are welcome.

Tacú Family Resource Centre 

The Tacú Family Resource Centre is pleased to announce that all of their regular groups will be resuming their activities over the coming days in the centre and they are as follows: 

Craft-mates on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 1pm; Knitting Group on Fridays from 2 to 4pm; Yoga Classes will return on September 12 (contact Kelly at 087-3735776); Pottery for Children (contact Amanda at 087-0698026).

Bingo 

Bingo (also via the online platform Zoom) takes place in the Parish Centre, Ballinrobe, on Tuesday (tonight) at 8.30pm.

Parent and Baby Group 

The Parent and Baby Group (for babies aged up to one year) meet every Wednesday, from 10.30am to 12.15pm in the Maple Youth Centre, Bowgate Street. All are welcome to attend and have a cup of tea and a chat.

Toddler Group 

The Toddler Group meet every Tuesday, also in the Maple Youth Centre, Ballinrobe, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The cost for this group is €3 per session.

New members are welcome.

Roxboro Defibrillator AGM

The annual general meeting of Roxboro Community Defibrillator group will take place on Thursday, September 12th, in the Parish Office, at 8pm. All residents of Roxboro, and adjacent townlands, are invited to attend.
