Local Notes: Rathlee NS students win Sligo Cuman na mBunscol Sports Quiz
Congratulations to Rathlee NS - winners of the Sligo Cuman na mBunscol Sports Quiz held recently in The Great Southern Hotel. They will now represent Sligo at Connacht and All-Ireland level.
The death took place peacefully at the Northwest Hospice, Sligo, of Ignatius Lynott, Parke, Kilglass, Enniscrone, surrounded by his family on Friday, January 30.
Ignatius was predeceased by his parents John and Rita, his wife Maureen, brother Ambrose and sister Regina. He was the beloved father of Ignatius and Lorraine and his partner Martina and her daughter Anna-Marie, sisters Mary and Veronica, grandsons Oisin, Stephen, James, Eoin and Luke, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Ignatius reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina on Sunday evening, February 1, from 7.30 until 9pm. His funeral arrived to the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone, on Monday, February 2, for Requiem Mass followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass. May Ignatius rest in peace.
The death took place of Sylvester (Sylvie) Rouse, The Strand, Castlecove, Enniscrone, peacefully surrounded by family and loving staff at the Sonas Ard na Greine Nursing Home, Enniscrone. Sylvester was predeceased by his loving wife of more than 60 years Mary (May). He was the beloved father to Tony (Sharron), Maureen (Ray) and Mike (Sandi), proud Pa to Melanie, Kyle, Scott, Emily, Sean, William, and great grandpa to Lily, dear brother to Tony (Mary).
Sylvester was predeceased by his sisters Mary, Mond, Teresa, Nan, Benny and by brothers Mike, Sean, Willie, Frank and Tom.
Sylvester reposed at Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Dromore West on Monday, February 2, from 5 until 7pm with removal to the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone. His requiem Mass was held on Tuesday morning at 11am followed by private cremation. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
2026 is the year that Rathlee National School proudly celebrates 100 years of education — a century of learning, community, and achievement. As part of the centenary celebrations, the school are inviting past and present members of the school community to share old photographs, memories, stories or memorabilia.

A great day of chess, culture and competition was had by students of Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Stokane NS and Killeenduff NS who were among 80 players competing in the inter schools Sligo Chess and Culture Festival held in the Diamond Coast Hotel, Enniscrone, on Wednesday, February 4 last. The event was brilliantly organised, with all boards linked to a master scoreboard. All students had a great day and gained a valuable, memorable experience.
What a show Mama Mia Papa Mia turned out to be at Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone. A massive well done to the incredible transition year students who worked tirelessly and with such commitment to make the musical a huge success. Their talent, teamwork and energy truly shone on stage and behind the scenes.
The school thank all the businesses and individuals who sponsored the musical and donated raffle prizes, the TY co-ordinators Ms Ria Loughney and Peter McLoughlin, who gave so generously of their time, guidance and support to bring the musical to life; to Ms Moore and her choir, who were absolutely fabulous; to choreographer Ciara Sweeney, whose fantastic choreography brought such energy, style and fun to the stage; and finally to the amazing audiences who supported the school over the two nights.
Ranganna Gaeilge le muinteoir Doireann commenced on Wednesday last and will continue every Wednesday for beginners from 7-7.50pm and intermediate from 8- 8.50pm until March 11, in the Ocean Sands Hotel, Enniscrone. A fantastic night of dancing and celebration will be held at the Ocean Sands Hotel, Enniscrone, on Saturday, March 14, when the Eoghan Rua Ladies FC will mark an incredible year for the club, including; Senior Champions 2025 – two years in a row and a host of underage titles. Special guest on the night will be Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Kerry LGFA All Ireland champion and 5 time All Star. The night is open to all club members, supporters and the wider community. Everyone is welcome to join the club as they celebrate these fanctastic achievements in style.

The numbers drawn in the Easkey GAA and Eoghan Rua combined lotto which was held on February 1, last were 10, 15, 27 and 36. There was no jackpot winner and the consolation prizes went to; Teresa Calpin, Pat Connaughton, Ian Clarke, Orla and Trevor Feeney and Amy Fleming. The jackpot in the latest draw held on February 8, was €11,000.
The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs blotto draw held on February 1, were 3, 14 and 28. There was no jackpot winner and the €25 prizewinners were Kate Regan, Jade Freeney, John Maughan and Eugene Sweeney. Fairy House Handicraft presents a flower arrangement workshop at Kilglass Parish Community Centre and Hub on Saturday, March 7, from 12 noon to 3pm. A Valentines Disco will be held in the Old Factory, Easkey, on Friday, February 13, from 6 to 8pm in aid of Rathlee and Killeenduff NS Parents Association. Admission is €5 per child and the disco is for U13’s only. There will be a tuck shop on site.

A Dementia Awareness workshop will be held in West Sligo Family Resource Centre, Enniscrone, on Wednesday, February 18, at 11am, 1pm and 3.30pm. Dementia is not simply a health issue but a social issue that requires a community response. A dementia inclusive community is one in which people living with dementia, their families and carers can live their lives well in an understanding and supportive society. By participating in one of the Dementia Awareness Workshops, this will give people an insight into how organisations, sporting clubs, businesses or individuals can help to build a Dementia inclusive community in their area. The annual Gerard Jones Memorial Cup Handball competition was held in Castleconnor Handball Club on Sunday, February 1, last. The games started at 10am and there was a great number of entrants and the club are grateful to Bofield Handball Club where some of the earlier games were held.
The club extend thanks to all the participants, displaying great sportsmanship and exciting viewing for all who attended throughout the day; to all the organisers, those who helped in the kitchen, those who provided an array of food for the visitors and competitors and to Gerry Curley of Office PRO who has supported the club and sponsored the tournament every year.
Winners of the Gerard Jones Memorial Cup were Jason Earlis and Seamus Foody and this was presented by Damian Jones. Cup runners up were Darragh Sweeney and Jimmy Sheridan; Plate winners were Peter Cassidy and Chris Gavigan; and Plate runners up were Michael Gilmartin and Brian Donegan.
Castleconnor Handball Club congratulate Cian Corcoran who came runner up in the rescheduled final of the U13 boys Liam Burke Memorial competition in Newport Handball Alley last week, and they congratulate Willia Cahill of Bofield Handball Club who won the title after a hard fought battle which went to a tie breaker.
The Castleconnor GAA All-Stars meet on Saturdays from 10am to 10.45am in Castleconnor Community Centre with fun games for children aged 4-12 years with additional needs and their siblings. Parents must stay and play. To book a place contact Bernie Finlay at 087 6164788.
