Local Notes: Presentation to Belmullet GAA Club stalwart Henry Gaughan.

Long standing Belmullet GAA Club stalwart Henry Gaughan from Drum was recognised for his dedication and commitment and support over the years with a presentation from club chairman William Sullivan along with club officers/committee members at the recent 2025 Bord na nÓg awards.

Belmullet GAA Bord na nÓg awards

The Belmullet GAA held its annual Bord na nÓg awards for the 2025 season in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel recently. The club is now catering for 400 underage players plus U21, Junior and senior men and ladies teams. This size of a club has large annual running costs, in addition to these annual running costs the club are in the early stages of planning a 3-phase development project for the Tallagh Ground. This will be ongoing over the next number of years. The development will comprise of a third fully lit all weather pitch.

In addition to the pitch the club has plans for the further development of the gym, the building of a large utility shed and surfacing the car park areas. These ambitious off the field plans will combine with the excellent underage structure.

The club made a special presentation on the evening to long standing club stalwart Henry Gaughan from Drum. Since his return from England in 1973 he has been a constant member of Belmullet GAA and he was recognised for his dedication and commitment over the years. Henry has held many positions in the club over those years. He has been a rock and the go-to-man of Belmullet GAA for over 50 years. He has driven generations of players all over the county and indeed the country. He knew them all individually and had a special connection with each and every one of them. His interest in them continued far past their playing days. Very few men could keep control of a bus load of U14’s like Henry Gaughan. When he shouted ‘hey sit down back there’ you just did. He has an unbelievable love for Belmullet GAA, its grounds, clubhouse and its players. He celebrated every win and lamented every loss with the club over the years. Henry is known throughout County Mayo and further afield. The life time service award also marked his 80th birthday. Congratulations to Henry.

Derek Langan Memorial Pool 2025

The Derek Langan Memorial Pool event has a new first time winner as Eoghan McGrath became the tenth different player to get his hands on the cup after a 5-2 win over Kevin Togher recently. Eoghan played some superb pool in the final and was on top form in earlier rounds especially in his semi-final win over last year’s champion Ed Holmes. He had defeated Paul Neary in the quarter finals earlier as well as wins over Oisín Padden and Darragh Gaughan on the Saturday afternoon. In the final it was frame for frame for the first five frames but Eoghan won three in a row to take the title despite the best efforts of Kevin who was unable to bring the form he showed in previous rounds into the decider. The semi-finalists were Ed Holmes and Kian Gallagher who both played some excellent pool over the weekend. It was brilliant to see PJ Langan there to present the cup to Eoghan and his son Damien thanked each and every player for entering and making the weekend such a success.

The weekend was a powerful reminder of how deeply Derek’s memory lives on through this event. Thank you to everyone who continues to honour him by taking part.
