Moyne Villa win 1st ever Connacht Cup

Headford club Moyne Villa claimed their first ever provincial title on Saturday, May 4, when the club’s U16 boys’ team defeated Maree/Oranmore 1-0 in the U16 Connacht Cup final. Moyne Villa had played host to a plethora of underage Connacht Cup and Shield finals over the May Bank Holiday weekend, at their excellent venue, and a large home support turned up on the day to support the club’s U16 side. The crucial goal for Moyne Villa arrived during the early stages of the second half, courtesy of JJ Ofiah. There was also a Mayo connection to Moyne Villa’s historic and memorable victory, as two of their players - Mikey Molloy and Robert McGaugh - are from Glencorrib and The Neale. Well done to all involved on what was a memorable day for Moyne Villa.

Ballinrobe Town suffer defeat

Ballinrobe Town were involved in a six goal thriller on Sunday morning, May 12, away to Conn Rangers in what was an absorbing Super League clash, with the locals prevailing in the end on a 4-2 scoreline. The south Mayo visitors made a positive start to this clash and opened the scoring after 10 minutes, courtesy of JP O’Gorman. But Rangers hit back in some style and two quick-fire goals from Cian McHale and Eoin Prendergast on 30 and 31 minutes respectively, turned the game on its head and the hosts led 2-1 at the break.

The second half was a real nip and tuck affair; however, the Mount Falcon outfit plundered a vital third goal on 55 minutes, courtesy of a tidy finish from PJ Gilmartin.

A doughty Ballinrobe refused to wilt and a fine finish from Oisin Connolly on 60 minutes reignited the Robesiders comeback hopes. Conn Rangers then made a tactical masterstroke when their substitutes Sean Holmes and Evan Reape combined on 68 minutes and the latter’s seasoned finish secured the spoils for the north Mayo men. It was a crushing defeat for a gallant Ballinrobe side, who are still searching for their first top flight victory of the new season.
