Mayo Aontú representative Paul Lawless has expressed his concern on road safety at the crossroad junction on the Knock Road, Claremorris and has called for immediate action.
“The crossroad junction on the old Knock road, Claremorris has become the most dangerous stretch of road within the area with several crashes and near misses in recent years,” Mr Lawless said.
“There is a major issue with cars crossing the old Knock road and failing to stop, heightening the risk to other cars and pedestrians in the locality. The junction is the crossroads linking Knock road and Claremount manor. This junction has seen a significant increase in traffic volume as Google Maps and other GPS providers are directing motorists from Sligo to Castlebar via the old bog road at Damien Fahey Steel, toward Mount St Michael School and accessing the N60 Castlebar road at Claremorris Athletic Track.
“Strangers to the area travelling from the North are taking a right off the N17 and travelling across the bog road. These motorists in many cases do not realise they are approaching a crossroads and must stop. There have been many accidents at this junction in recent years.
“I am appealing to Mayo County Council to rectify the situation. I have also contacted Google Maps requesting the company direct traffic through an alternative route. In the meantime, I am appealing to the local motorists to exercise extreme caution while approaching this junction.”

Huge well done to Tuam/Oughterard Colts (TOC) who captured the Connacht Senior Women’s League title for the second year in a row after they hammered University of Galway (UG) 65-0 in the final in Creggs recently.
There was an interesting storyline in the match, as two sisters from Claremorris faced off against one another, Gráinne Hahessy playing for TOC, while her older sister Aisling captained UG. Both wore the number four shirt, no doubt it was a proud occasion for the Hahessy family. Claremorris’ Molly Ager lined out at hooker for the students.
It was a magnificent performance from the Colts as Claremorris’ Niamh Corless powered over for her side’s second try. The Colts contingent of Corless, Gráinne Hahessy and Rhona O’Dea were all outstanding, while Saoirse Quinn, Doireann Byrne and Rosie Ganley made an impact off the bench.
Tuam/Oughterard Colts: Hannah Clarke, Katie Creaven, Éabha Nic Dhonnacha, Amy Burns, Dominika Lukasik, Emma Burns, Rachel Forkan; Niamh Corless, Sarah-Jane Fox (captain), Holly Daly, Gráinne Hahessy, Karen Burns, Aebha Lydon, Rhona O’Dea, Karly Tierney. Replacements used: Ella Burns, Saoirse Quinn, Anna Larkin, Aoife O’Callaghan, Charlotte O’Grady, Doireann Byrne, Rosie Ganley.
