Local Notes: Marion Stenson, Rosserk Lodge, Swinford celebrates her 70th birthday
 Happy 70th Birthday to Marion Stenson, Rosserk Lodge, Bridge St, Swinford, Mayo Community Living and formerly of Killasser, Swinford, who celebrated the occasion with her family and friends on Thursday, February 15.
Swinford Killasser LGFA will host an open evening with a "Boot-ique" on Friday, March 1, in Swinford Amenity Park clubhouse. Join the club from 7-8pm to register your child for playing for 2024. Bring your phone and your credit/debit card to register.
The club is also holding a Swinford Killasser LGFA gear swap in their pop up boot-ique from 7-9pm. If you have old/unused/too small Swinford Killasser LGFA gear at home or your child has outgrown their boots, then you can drop off your gear in advance of the night to Trish/Julie in West Lex offices or Swinford Amenity. No cúl camp gear will be accepted. Only gear and boots that are clean and in good condition will be accepted. The gear swap is part of the LGFA's sustainability initiative.
Registration is also open now on GAA Foireann app. 2024 fees are as follows: adult player €80, adult non player €42, juvenile/U18 €70, U-10 €50, U-8 €40 G4MO €50, Nursery (must be 4 by 1 May 2024) €30. Bundles available: €10 off for 2 or more children. Come along to the open night for a smooth path to registration.
As part of ongoing development of referees across the country the LGFA is rolling out Regional Grab Your Whistle Club Youth Referee Courses. On March 2, the LGFA is hosting a course in Davitts LGFA/GAA Club, Ballindine. The course will run from 10am until 5pm. These courses are being offered at a discounted rate of €10 per participant. Places can be booked on Eventbrite.
Congratulations to Amy Dunleavy, daughter of Brian and Deirdre Dunleavy who was named University of Galway Ladies Football Captain. Amy is a Swinford Killasser LGFA stalwart player and at the conclusion of the 2023 season was named as a Yoplait LGFA Higher Education Rising Star. The club is very proud of her and wishes her and her university team mates the best of luck for the year ahead.
The first market of 2024 will take place on Saturday, March 2, in Swinford Cultural Centre from 10.30am to 2.30pm with a diverse range of vendors showcasing an array of products, including locally sourced produce, crafts, and other unique items. The organisers are excited to announce that Cácaí Acla will be serving teas, coffees, and their fabulous bakes indoors at the market, adding to the overall experience.
The annual general meeting of Swinford Indoor Market will take place in the Cultural Centre, Swinford on Saturday, March 2, at 3pm. Market trading will close at 2.30pm to facilitate the meeting.
Swinford Community Games AGM will take place on Wednesday, February 28, upstairs in the meeting room in Swinford Amenity Centre from 7 to 8pm. Card winners: 1st Tom Durkan and Philip Moore, 2nd/3rd shared between Maureen Morley, Mary Higgins, Esther Munnelly and Annie McNeela. Congratulations to Michaela Walsh who took gold at the National Senior Championships in the National Indoor Arena in Blanchardstown with a Throw of 15.03m, taking national lead, the furthest anyone has thrown in Ireland in 2024. This was Michaela’s seventh consecutive National Senior Indoor Title. Michaela is delighted with the result as she has transferred this year from the glide to the rotation and this throw was a massive personal best in the rotation. Michaelas’ achievement follows recent success in Loughborough International Open, where Michaela, representing her country, took first place in Group A of the Women’s Shot Putt.
Congratulations to Swinford Athletic Club who were announced as the Track and Field Juvenile Club of the Year at the recent Mayo Awards.
Swinford Gardening Club AGM will take place on Tuesday, February 27, in the Meeting Room on Lower Main Street at 8pm. All members are invited to attend. New members are also welcome.

Darkness into Light 2024 registration is now open. Swinford is taking a break this year, so Kiltimagh is delighted to host the 2024 event. Register on https://www.darknessintolight.ie/ select Mayo as your county and Kiltimagh/Swinford as your venue. The route will be just under 5km starting at the Bocce Court Kiltimagh.
Swinford AC annual Couch to 5km Run and Walk 2024 will take place on Saturday, March 2, at 11am. Registration is in Swinford Community Centre from 10.30am. The cost is €5 per person, €10 for a family. All are welcome and refreshments will be served afterwards.
Blue Light Day will take place in Swinford Amenity Park (F12 H593) on Saturday, March 2, from 10am to 2pm. The first hour from 10am to 11am will be silent hour. It is a family day showcasing all emergency service vehicles including live demonstrations. In attendance will be An Garda Síochána (including Mounted Unit, Air Support, Armed Support Unit), Fire Service, Irish Coast Guard, HSE, Civil Defence, Defence Forces and more. ‘The Year of the Hiker’ will be staged in Kilmovee on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March2, with all proceeds being divided between Kilmovee NS and Kilmovee Swimming Pool. Doors will open at 7.30pm and the play will start at 8pm. The cost is €10 per adult and €5 per child is payable at the door.
The death took place of Breege Spelman, Tallaghan, Ballaghaderreen, on February 11 peacefully surrounded by her family in the wonderful care of the nurses and staff at the North-West Hospice, Sligo.
Breege was predeceased by her parents Tom and Mary Anne and her sister Mary (Hopkins) and is sadly missed and remembered by her brother Michael, her nephews Keith and Darragh, niece Natalie, grand-nephew Drew, grand-niece Eve, cousins Regina (Finneran), Finola (Spellman Lyons) and Anne (Solan), brother-in-law Michael, her adored best friend Breen, her extended family, neighbours and many friends.
Breege was a very successful business lady having been manageress of the Lough Gara Hotel which operated on Main Street in the town and has been closed for some years now. Breege reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Tuesday, February 13,f ollowed by removal to St Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen, arriving at 8pm. Mass of the Resurrection was held on Wednesday, February 14, at 12 noon, followed by interment in Kilcolman cemetery. May Breege now rest in peace.
The death took place of Bill Elwood peacefully at Mayo University Hospital in his 93rd year. Bill is survived by his wife Carmel, daughters Marie and Anne, son Declan, daughter-in-law Gina, sons-in-law Brendan and Richie and his 10 adored grandchildren, siblings Mary (Ballyhaunis), Frances (Sligo) and John (Ballyhaunis), his niece Mary, nephews Gerard, Kevin, Paul and John, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, relatives, neighbours and friends. Bill was predeceased by his son Liam.
Bill reposed in Gavin’s Funeral Home, Knox Street, Ballyhaunis, on Friday, February 16, followed by removal at 8pm to St Mary’s Church, Gorthaganny. Mass of the Resurrection was held on Saturday, February 17, at 12 noon followed by interment in Gorthaganny Cemetery.

A one day Easter Camp will be held on Friday, April 5, from 10am-2pm in Bohola Community Centre. It is suitable for boys or girls 6-12 year olds. It costs €20 for one, and €35 for 2 siblings. Social Bingo continues every Monday in The Sheridan Memorial Community Centre, Bohola. Doors open at 8pm for an 8.30pm start. Community fun and a cup of tea is included.
The death occurred of Gerald Hyland, London and formerly of Carracastle, Bohola. He was buried in St Joseph’s Cemetery, Bohola, on Friday last. He was brother of TJ Hyland, Carracastle. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

As part of our 50th anniversary this year, Moy Davitts is compiling a special commemorative book looking back at the five eventful decades of the club’s history. This book will be launched at a special club event later this year.
