Kiltimagh’s Darkness Into Light (DIL) event last May raised a whopping €17,215.16, the most money raised in the county. This is a tremendous achievement for its first ever DIL event.
Commenting on the phenomenal success of the DIL Kiltimagh campaign, Irma Joyce, Campaign Executive Connacht for Pieta West, applauded the committee members for their outstanding contribution.
“On behalf of everyone here at Pieta and our clients, we would like to thank you all most sincerely for your wonderful contribution of €17,215.16,” Ms Joyce said. “This is now officially the strongest committee this year in Mayo. We are deeply appreciative of the countless hours and effort that you and your volunteers invested in planning and executing Darkness into Light Kiltimagh. It is truly inspiring to witness so many passionate and selfless individuals coming together for a common cause.”
Speaking at the presentation, chairperson Joe Corry said that along with all the volunteers, stewards and committee members, he was absolutely delighted with the outcome.
“It is an outstanding contribution of vital funds that our campaign has raised for Pieta’s suicide prevention services,” he said. “This year’s success is a credit to all involved, underscoring the strength and vibrancy of the community spirit here in Kiltimagh. A big thank you to all who took part to help make our inaugural walk such a huge success, and to our colleagues in Swinford who came out in force to join us on the day.”
Darkness into Light began in Dublin in 2009 and is now an international event. Kiltimagh’s committee was founded in 2023 to organise the community’s first walk in the town for 2024. Working in partnership with Swinford DIL, the objective is to alternate the walk every second year with Swinford taking the lead again for 2025.
By taking the reins this year, DIL Kiltimagh participants are playing an important role in support of Pieta’s services. After this year, the plan is for the DIL event to come back to Kiltimagh again in 2026.
The walk was held on May 11th starting at 4.15am. Over 500 people signed up and the majority of the money was raised by registrations in the weeks leading up to the event. Others registered on the morning of the event, and others donated via bucket collections and online.
