Local Notes: Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA present proceeds of tractor run to Kilmovee Civil Defence

At a recent meeting of Kilmovee Civil Defernce Mark Barry chairperson of Kilmovee Shamrocks makes a presentation of a cheque for €900 to Gerry Regan Co Ordinator of Kilmovee Civil Defence. The €900 was the proceeds of the recent tractor run organised by Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA club. There is less than a week left until Scoil Cheoil Siamsa begins on July 28. It's time to register if you haven't already done so. The Rhythm and Song workshop for 4-6 year olds is a new initiative this year. There is a great team on board and good fun while learning is guaranteed.
The Seomra na Gaeilge/ Pop up Gaeltacht (which is free thanks to Eoghan O'Connell) will run from 3 to 6pm and all age groups welcome to pop in at any stage. From 5pm a special emphasis will be placed on oral Irish exams. The mixed instruments session/workshop is another new initiative this year and anyone of any age group who would like to practice playing in a group and learn a few new tunes in a friendly fun environment is welcome.
The Swinford Comhaltas Annual Show will take place on the August Bank Holiday Monday night in Swinford Cultural Centre. This year’s show is ‘The Swinford Connections: le ceol agus le croí’. The show will focus on the many links forged by traditional music singing and dancing e.g. links between Ireland and other countries through the emigration of Irish artists, links between the musicians and traditions of the past and our present culture, the connections between music and other forms of artistic expression. All of this will be interspersed with the music, singing, dancing, poetry and storytelling of wonderful local and visiting performers. Bígí linn.
The 4th annual ‘Time to Shine’ talent show takes place this year on Friday, August 1, in Julian’s of Midfield. It’s a very enjoyable show with great prizes for both junior and senior sections, but if you’re not in you can’t win. Swinford Show Entertainment 2025 for all the family. For the children there will be a pet farm on site with lima's, snakes, reptiles, rabbits, goats. sheep and lots more. Entertainment for the day includes bouncy castles, obstacle courses, face painting and live music with Stuart Moyles and his band with dancing. Swinford Agricultural Show Day 2025 is Sunday, August 24.

Tickets for the 2025 Club Development Draw are on sale for €100 with a staggering €97,500 of prize money to be won, that’s 200 prizes ranging over €200 to €10,000. For every €100 ticket sold, €90 goes directly back to Swinford GAA club. Tickets can be bought from senior players, football coaches and the executive committee.

The weekend of July 12th/13th was a weekend of blazing sunshine, blistering scores and a few weary golfers wilting in the heat. In the Ladies 9 Hole Stableford, Geraldine Turbitt kept her cool to take top honours with 21 points, edging out Ann Moore and Carmel Timoney on 19 points each.
Meanwhile, in the Gents 18 Hole Stableford, Sean Golden turned the course into his own treasure trove, striking a mighty 45 points. Philip Irwin Jnr, with a score that would win most competitions was second with 44, while Vincent Murtagh rounded out the podium on 40.

The death occurred of Nancy Rainey, Blanemore, Straide. She was buried in Straide cemetery after her funeral Mass in St Peter and Paul Church, Straide, on Saturday, July 19. Nancy was mother of Mary Jordan, Treenduff, Bohola. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved.

Meabh Lavin and Saerlaith Dillon who were members of the Mayo U16 team who were defeated by Kerry in the All Ireland A final in Nenagh on Wednesday, July 16 last.
The seniors lost out to Burrishoole in their final group match of Division 1 Senior League, on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-09. Finishing third in the group, they will now face Castlebar Mitchels in the Division 1 shield final.
Hard to luck to the U14's who came up against a strong team from The Neale in their B Championship semi-final. They were right in the game until the final ten minutes, when The Neale finished with a flourish. The final score was 7-13 to 4-08.

The death took place of Seamus McDermott, Chester Road, Sutton, Coldfield, Birmingham and formerly of Lisacurkia, Tibohine, Castlerea, suddenly, at home on July 4. He was predeceased by his wife Sheila, parents John and Bridget and his brother John. Seamus is survived by his sons John and Eugene, brothers Tim, Paddy and Roger, sisters Margaret, Breedge, Ann, Una, Patricia, Betty, Teresa and Carmel, daughter-in-law Mediha, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
Seamus reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Sunday, July 20, followed by removal at 7.30pm to St. Baoithin’s Church, Tibohine arriving at 8pm. Mass of the Resurrection was held yesterday, Monday, July 21, at 11am, followed by interment in Tibohine (new) cemetery. May he rest in peace.
