Everybody at Lisaniska National School would like to congratulate the girls for their incredible performances in the recent FAI 5-a-side competition in Milebush. The girls played brilliantly throughout and came up just short of a very strong Belcarra side. It was the school's first time to compete at the county level and was a great experience for those in the team who will hopefully be back again next year.
Glowing tributes were paid during the week to the late Peter Tobin, Ballinahaglish, Knockmore, whose unexpected death took place in Mayo University Hospital on April 19. Peter who was formerly of The Tobin Family Jewellers, Pearse Street, Nenagh, was a wonderful husband, father, brother and work colleague and will be sadly missed by all. He was remembered during the week by his work colleagues in Hollister together with neighbours and friends as a true gentleman with a lovely sense of humour but most of all as a dedicated husband and father.
Peter’s remains reposed at his residence on Saturday and Sunday, and his removal took place to St Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina, on the Monday afternoon for his 1.30pm Requiem Mass. He was laid to rest afterwards in Ballinahaglish Cemetery.
Peter was pre-deceased by his parents Peter and Annette and infant brother Aidan and is survived by his beloved wife Ann, his treasured daughters Rhianna and Emily, his sisters Olivia, Catherine, Paula, Deirdre and Kerrie, his brothers Andrew and Patrick, in-laws, nephews, nieces, neighbours and friends to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy. May he now rest in peace.

Crossmolina and Kiltmagh served up a very entertaining U16 Division 3 League tie in Gilmartin Park on Thursday last. Two first half goals from Conor Hession and Tom Smyth sent the hosts in to a commanding lead despite playing into a stiffish breeze. Five Ethan Reilly points and one from Aaron Keane left the Deel siders trailing by 2-5 to 0-6 as Ethan Reilly, Aaron Keane and Dylan Lavelle nibbled away at the lead with points. Conn McDermott grabbed an opportunist goal and two Conor Howley goals for Crossmolina in the fourth quarter reduced the lead back to one point before Jack Shannon restored his sides advantage again. Two points from Ethan Reilly left just two separating the sides at the final whistle with a final score of Kiltimagh 4-8, Crossmolina 2-12.

The Ramblers were informatively entertained on Thursday night by an insightful introduction to, and observations of Irish Army life in New York. It’s origin stretch back to the Young Irelanders failed rebellion of 1848. Thank you to the guest speaker and local United Nations veteran peacekeeper John Blehein, for sharing his enthusiasm about representing Ireland and Moygownagh, by marching in the recent New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He shared many photographs of the event.
John also spoke briefly about his experiences of overseas missions to various UN peace keeping deployments he participated in, throughout the Middle East. Although Ireland’s military are not actively involved in open warfare, their considerable contributions to peacekeeping can be fought by danger, through sniper fire, aggression, or the untimely explosion of landmines. It is a sobering thought that not all army personnel make a safe return home to share their stories.
Moygownagh Ramblers May dates are May 2, 16 and 30 in Moygownagh Learning Forum commencing at 7pm.
A clothing collection fundraiser in aid of Carn National School will take place on Monday, May 27. Bags can be dropped off at the school on Thursday , May 23 and Friday, May 24. All donations will be appreciated.
