Local Notes: Fr Victor celebrated his Silver Jubilee with Mass of Thanksgiving in Swinford.

Congratulations are extended to Fr Victor who recently celebrated his Silver Jubilee. To mark this milestone Fr Victor celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving in Swinford Church on Friday, July 12, followed by a get together in Swinford Cultural Centre organised by the parish council.

Cathal's walking adventure across Europe continues and early this week sees him hit the 750kms milestone on his 2200km long charity walk from Canterbury to Rome in aid of Mayo Parkinson's Assoc and Childrens Health Foundation Crumlin. The messages from home and from Swinford people all over the world continue to give him a great boost as he walks. Cathal’s family and friends will be having a stand on the street during the upcoming Siamsa Festival and look forward to seeing you there. A meeting to revive Swinford Tennis Club will be held in Melletts Emporium on Tuesday, July 23, at 8pm, the success of which depends on turn out.
The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community lotto held on July 15, were 12, 13, 16 and 21. €70 vouchers were won by Susan Nolan, Killasser and Paddy and Fiona, Swinford; €35 was won by Yvonne Grealy, Swinford, Tríona O'Dohoghue, Cloonaghboy, Margaret Muldowney, Rabawn and Mullaney Family, c/o Moore's. Over the weekend of July 13 and 14, Swinford Golf Club witnessed exceptional golfing performances in both the men’s and women’s competitions, generously sponsored by Tower Hardware. The pleasant weather conditions provided the perfect backdrop for some of the season's highest scores.
In the men’s division, Padraig O'Toole led with an impressive 45 points, closely followed by Ian Lyndon with 44 points and Gearoid Brady with 43. Noteworthy was Francisco Lamarque's round, who shot a remarkable 2 over gross to place fourth with 42 points.
The women’s competition saw equally high scores with Siobhan King taking the lead with 43 points. Catherine Loftus and Mary Horkan followed with 41 and 40 points, respectively.
Parking will be prohibited on Main, Market and Bridge Street from 9pm on Monday, August 5, until 1am on Thursday, August 8, to facilitate the two biggest days of the Síamsa Sráide Street and Arts Festival, the Heritage Day and The Old Harvest Fair Day. There is a skip placed at Killasser graveyard until August 19, to facilitate the clean-up graves. A clean-up day will be held on July 27.
Congratulations to Maeve Nevin who was the winner of the Swinford GAA 50/50 draw held on Tuesday, July 16, in Horkan’s winning €444. The next draw will be held on Tuesday, July 23, in The Sheepwalk.

The Railway Players Variety and Drama Group in collaboration with Flare Productions and Siamsa Sráide are planning Musical Theatre workshops which will take place during the week before Siamsa Sráide, July 29 to August 2, from 10am to 1pm. A week of song, dance and drama will culminate in a performance which will be one of the many highlights of the 40th anniversary of Siamsa Sráide. The annual Scoil Cheoil Siamsa will take place during the week before Siamsa Sráide, from July 29 to August 2. Music, singing, dancing and conversational Irish classes will take place between 4 and 7pm in the Primary School in Swinford (Scoil Muire agus Treasa). Instruments include banjo, bodhrán, button accordion, concertina, fiddle, flute, guitar, tin whistle, harp and keyboard. Availability of classes depends on level of interest. Classes last an hour and the cost for the week is €35. Dancing with Gráinne Kelly and comhrá gaeilge (conversational Irish) will be free in collaboration with Swinford/Killasser LGFA. Several group performance sessions will be held during the week. Participants are encouraged to book as soon as possible to facilitate timetabling. The annual Killasser Cemetery Mass will take place on August 14, on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption. Mass will be celebrated in Meelick Cemetery on Sunday, August 4, at 9am; Kilconduff Cemetery on Monday, August 5th at 6.30pm and Midfield Cemetery on Thursday, August 15, at 7pm.

The bicentenary celebrations will commence with Mass at 4pm on August 3 in St Patrick’s Church, Glann. It is understood that people are walking from Urlaur and surrounding areas to reinact how people walked to Mass in Glann in the past.
Community Art Group Ballaghaderreen is organising an art exhibition for all local artists during the upcoming BallaghDream Festival. The exhibition will run from Monday, August 5 until and including Thursday 8 August in the big hall in Phoenix Youth Centre. King of the Hill - part of Keash Garland Festival will be held on Saturday evening, July 27. There are two routes that are challenging, offering wonderful views of Keash countryside. Also a 5k family walk with proceeds going to Gurteen/Culfadda/Keash Community First Responders Defibrillator Group, which is an invaluable service to the local area. Register online or on the day at Eastern Harps Clubhouse from 5.30. 10k run starts at 7pm, the 5k run starts at 7.20, and 5k walkers at 7.10.
Gurteen Tidy Towns committee extend thanks to members who spread a total of 12 bags of bright stone on the bank strip opposite AOL to show off shrubs and flowering plants. Gurteen looks really well, with flower beds on approach roads, and planter boxes on the streets and bridge. They also extend thanks to the men on Leader who are keeping the streets clean. Well done to all.
