Congratulations to Fionn Durkan on making history representing Ireland at the I-Karate World Championships, where all his hard work, dedication and commitment has paid off. Fionn went on to win 3 medals - silver in the International Paired Kata with Karl from Belgium; bronze in the Paired Kumite with coach Aaron; and bronze in the Individual Kata. Fionn's club extends thanks to I-Karate Ireland, I-Karate Global and all competition organisers for this opportunity. This is only the beginning for Fionn. As Síamsa Sráide Street Festival Swinford turns 40 and Blath na Feile celebrates its 10th year it has been decided to invite all past Blaths to compete in Queen of the Blath where one will be crowned the Queen of them all. Swinford and District Gardening Club regret that due to unforeseen circumstances the Trip to Leitrim, planned for July 13, has had to be postponed until Autumn.
Cathals walking adventure across Europe continues and having enjoyed a rest day last Wednesday he continues on his journey to Rome, currently crossing the Hauts De France region of France. Later this week and early next week he will come to two of the great Cathedral cities of Europe and France, Laon and Reims. The messages and support Cathal regularly receives from home and elsewhere are a huge source of comfort as he undertakes the epic pilgrim walk the Via Francigena of 2200km from Canterbury to Rome in aid of Mayo Parkinson's Association and Children's Health Foundation Crumlin. The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on June 24 were; 12, 16, 18 and 28. There was no jackpot winner. €70 vouchers were won by Frank Price, Cullane and SJ and Johnny Burke, Killasser; €35 was won by Diane Ryan, Carracanada and Evelyn Ward, Killasser. The Síamsa Sráide, Street and Arts Festival, table quiz takes place on Friday, July 5, at 9pm in Boland’s. Teams of 4 cost €10 per person. There will be a raffle on the night.
The next Swinford Indoor Market will take place on Saturday, July 6, in Swinford Cultural Centre, running from 10.30am to 3pm. A variety of products, such as locally sourced produce, crafts, and unique items will be on offer on the day. Cácaí Acla will be offering teas, coffees, and their delightful bakes at the market, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Swinford Siamsa Sraide 2024 was successfully launched in the Whitehouse on Friday, June 21, with the brochure of events launched by Michaela Walsh. The 40th festival brochure of events is now available in local business or visit siamsasraide.ie to download your copy. The streets of Swinford will be the place to be from August 2 to August 7.
The next Fair Night session will be held in Mellett’s on Wednesday, July 3, from 9pm with special guest Fr James McDonagh. Everyone welcome to join in or sit back and enjoy the music.
The Railway Players Variety and Drama Group in collaboration with Flare Productions and Siamsa Sráide are planning musical theatre workshops which will take place during the week before Siamsa Sráide, July 29 to August 2, (10am to 1pm). A week of song, dance and drama will culminate in a performance which will be one of the many highlights of the 40th anniversary of Siamsa Sráide. The annual Scoil Cheoil Siamsa will take place during the week before Siamsa Sráide, from July 29 to August 2. Music, singing, dancing and conversational Irish classes will take place between 4pm and 7pm in the Primary School in Swinford (Scoil Muire agus Treasa). Instruments include banjo, bodhrán, button accordion, concertina, fiddle, flute, guitar, tin whistle, harp and keyboard. Availability of classes depends on level of interest. Classes last an hour and the cost for the week is €35. Dancing with Gráinne Kelly and comhrá gaeilge (conversational Irish) will be free in collaboration with Swinford/Killasser LGFA. Several group performance sessions will be held during the week. Participants are encouraged to book as soon as possible to facilitate timetabling. The death took place of Margaret McDonnell, Tobracken, Ballaghaderreen, on June 19, peacefully at Roscommon University Hospital surrounded by her family. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Jack, her sisters Lena, Kathleen, Mae and Bridie and her brothers Tommy, Paddy, Michael and infant brother Johnny.
Margaret McDonnell (nee Duffy) was a native Ballinrumpa, Kilmoovee, and is survived by her sons Michael and John, grandchildren Seoirse, Jack, Kayleigh, Ailise and Aaron, great-grandson Fionn, daughters-in-law Betty and Ursula, Seoirse’s husband Robert, her nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Margaret reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Thursday, June 20, with removal from the Funeral Home on Friday, June 21, to St Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen, arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 11am followed by interment in Kilcolman Cemetery. May Margaret rest in peace.

The death took place on June 17 at Drumderrig House Nursing Home, Boyle, of Mona Smullen, Gurteen View, Gurteen and formerly of Irishtown, Dublin. A friendly and good humoured member of the community she will be sadly missed. She was predeceased by her parents Bridget and Tom, her sister Betty Courtney and nephews Robert and Dermot.
Mona’s remains reposed at the home of her niece Louise at Kilfree, Gurteen and were removed on Thursday morning to Lakelands Crematoriuum, Cavan, for a cremation service. Sympathy is extended to her niece Louise Halligan and husband Noel, grandnephews, grandnieces, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. May she rest in peace.
The death took place on June 18 in Sydney, Australia of Martin Doherty, brother of Ann Conlon, Gurteen.

The death took place on June 15 at Cuan Caitriona Castlebar and late of Culfadda, of Sister Emmanuel. She was sister of the late Kathleen Reynolds (wife of Albert Reynolds) and she taught in Gurteen Secondary and VEC school. May she rest in peace.
The death has taken place at the North West Hospice, Sligo, on June 19 of Brian Shannon, Finisklin, Culfadda. His remains reposed at Perry's Funeral Home, Ballymote, on Saturday evening with removal on Sunday afternoon to Culfadda Church for Funeral Mass with burial afterwards in Knockbrack Cemetery. He is survived by his brother John, sister Agnes, his cousin and carer Mary Molloy, extended family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.
