The officers and committee of Erris Athletic Club and members of Mayo AC who hosted a very successful Westnet Mayo Even Ages - junior, senior and masters Cross Country Championships event at Doolough recently.

Successful Athletics event

The Westnet Mayo Even Ages, junior, senior and masters Cross Country championships was hosted by Erris Athletic Club in conjunction with Mayo AC at Doolough, Geesala recently. Weather conditions were ideal with underfoot competitions perfect. The course was on sand dunes along Doolough beach, Geesala within a few feet of a magnificent beach looking towards Achill. Many of the athletes finished off the day with a post-race sea swim. There were many newcomers to athletics on the day and others were there to give it their all and qualify for the Connacht Championships. Athletes travelled from all corners of Mayo to compete.

Thanks very much to Erris Athletic Club for hosting the event and to all the officials who officiated to ensure the smooth running of the competition. Well done to the 16 schools that participated on the today with a record number participating with a total of 234 children. Thanks to everyone who helped with the event Erris AC trainers, teachers and parents who helped make the event a huge success.The top 12 individuals and top three teams qualify for the Mayo event in Belleek.

You can influence the Health Programme in Kiltane

An informal relaxed meeting will be held in Bangor Erris Parish Hall on Wednesday, October 2, at 7pm, where people will meet some of the ‘Sláintecare Healthy Communities’ workers and together they can help plan and shape the type of health programmes people would like to see in the parish of Kiltane. The draw was held on September 22, and the numbers drawn were; 1, 4, 31 and 33 for a jackpot of €7,500. Harvest Thanksgiving Festival in the Church of Ireland, Belmullet

All Church of Ireland and Anglican members and anyone who might enjoy a service of singing, prayer, celebrating and feasting afterwards are invited to come along on Saturday, October 5, in the Church of Ireland, Belmullet for their Harvest Thanksgiving Festival.

Ballyglass RNLI

There was another callout recently for Ballyglass RNLI inshore lifeboat, when they were called to a boat that was caught by the ebbing tide in the channel close to Belmullet in Broadhaven Bay. The volunteer crew assessed the vessel on arrival on scene. The boat was anchored and the crewman was taken ashore, all safe and sound. The lifeboat launched at 10.50am for service at 1125. Helm was PJ Walker and crew Ryan Geraghty and Kyle Geraghty. Well done to all involved.

Fundraising book sale

A fundraising book sale in aid of the Help Mags Find Relief Fund will be held in Inver Community Centre on Sunday, October 6, from 2 til 5pm. The event is organised by the past pupils of Naíonra Gleann na Muaidhe in support of Betty and her family. They are looking for donations of all types of used books for all age categories.

Sports Clubs are the heartbeat of communities, particularly in rural Ireland, and recently Councillor Gerry Coyle was delighted that over €9m in funding has been allocated through the Sports Capital program for Mayo sporting organisations, including locally the following clubs: C.L.G Cill Chomáin GAA Community Development limited - Cill Chomáin GAA Development Ltd €186,965, Kiltane GAA Community Complex - Redevelopment of the Kiltane GAA community complex €120,000, Turasoireacht Iorras Teo. - Course Machinery/Ladies Changing Rooms €73,044.

Not only did we all enjoy the success of the Irish athletes at the Olympics in Paris over the Summer but also here locally following local athletes excelling in their chosen disciplines, be it rugby, boxing, pool, rowing, GAA, athletics and so on. A special mention to the wonderful volunteers involved in all of the local sporting clubs, you are the reason these clubs exist and continue to thrive. ‘I have been involved in sports clubs all my life so I’m always happy to lend my support to our local clubs and I wish all of the clubs continued success’, said Cllr Gerry Coyle.

Erris Utd

On Friday evening, September 20, four murals were unveiled in the club stand. The murals are the result of the excellent efforts of the art classes in St Brendan's College and Our Lady's Secondary School and many thanks to the students and their teachers over the past months.

Many thanks also to Frank (RSS), Micheál and Ann (Iorras Domhnann CE) for preparing the stand with new seating and putting the murals in place and keeping the grounds and clubhouse clean and presentable; to Shevlin Engineering for the seat brackets; and to Councillor Sean Carey for supporting the project.

Congratulations to the Iorras U16 panel on capturing the Division 2 (A) title at home to Conn Rangers on Saturday, September 21, with a 7-3 full time score.

Goals from Kyle Healy and Ryan Shevlin in the opening half and Kyle again in the second half with Ciaran Cosgrove and a hat-trick from Keelan Barrett to round off another excellent performance. Managers, Paul Reilly, Gareth O'Malley and David Reilly were delighted with the side and their league season.

Iorras U16 recently travelled to Cleggan in Galway to take on local side West Coast Utd in round 1 of the Connaught Cup and progressed on a 3-1 scoreline. Goals from Thomas McWilliams in 30 minutes with Keelan Barrett the provider and two second half efforts from Kyle Healy on 58 minutes, Blake Doocey provider for the first one and again on 79 minutes, Gabriel Hogget provider. Well done all.

Cheque presentation

Mayo/Roscommon Hospice was very grateful to receive a cheque for €7,550 from Maureen Gannon recently. Maureen and members of the Gannon family held a fundraiser, 'Cuppa for Kev', which was held in the Broadhaven Hotel. The event was in memory of Maureen's late father Kevin, who was partial to a cup of tea. It is very much appreciated. The cheque was presented by Maureen Gannon to Mayo Roscommon Hospice CEO, Martina Jennings.

Running over eight weeks, delivered by professionals and individuals with lived experience, this programme is designed for those who are concerned about their own behaviours and substance use, and for those who would like to connect with others in a non-judgmental and supportive space to learn more about the effects of substance use, as well as methods to support positive change and the supports that are available to them within the community.

Session topics will be delivered by a different facilitator each week, including wellness workshops with Terra Firma, Smart Recovery with Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force, self-care and compassion with the Mayo Recovery College and a motivational session with Dr. Sean Foy, to name a few.

Kiltane GAA Club news

There was no winner of this week’s Kiltane GAA Club weekly lotto jackpot of €14,600 with the two €50 winners being Liam Devlin, Bangor and John G Togher, while Bridie O’Donnell, Cloontakilla and Michael Flynn, Westport both won €25. The two online winners were Breege Cafferkey, Belmullet €50 and Anna Doherty, Dooyork €25.

Cèide Coast Run 

Ballycastle Athletic club held a very successful Cèide Coast Atlantic Run with over 400 participants taking part, comprising of local, national and international athletes. The weather played a big part in the large entry with ideal running conditions on the day.

The local community came out in force once again to encourage the athletes in the races, steward and marshall the course and provide well earned refreshments in the hall when the race was ended. Ballycastle Athletic club extends sincere thanks to the athletes and their supporters, sponsors, Midwest Radio, the Ballycastle Community and anyone who helped in any way to make the event such a great success.

Recent death 

Sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and friends of Sally Walsh, Dikeman, Delaware, USA who died recently (sister of Phil Healy, Sea Road and Margaret, USA). May she rest in peace.

Autumn Exhibitions 

An opening event and catalogue launch will take place on October 5, from 5 -7pm at the Ballinglen Museum of Art with 'Paintings of Memory and Imagination' by Papita Bourke Nicholson of Enniscoe House. The exhibition will run until  February 7.

An exhibition by Bridget Flannery 'A Retrospective' continues in the Ballinglen Gallery until October 31.

Tractor Run 

Lacken Tractor Run returns on Sunday, October 6, with registration at the Failte Room beside Lacken Church at 11am. All are welcome to come along and enjoy.
