Ballinrobe Town's U14 girls team recorded an impressive 2-0 victory away to Westport United in the U14 Girls Cup quarter-final recently.
The game was keenly contested from the outset, but Ballinrobe snatched the lead midway through the first half. The goal derived from a Laoise Heneghan set piece and Emma O’Toole was on hand to head the ball to the roof of the net, much to the delight of the away bench.
The visitors almost doubled their lead before the break, but Anabel Weber was unlucky to see her fizzing strike hit the upright.
Ballinrobe began the second half brightly and were awarded a spot-kick after Faith O’Gorman’s strike was handled inside the area by a Westport player. Laoise Heneghan was given the dead ball responsibility, and she made no mistake.
United poured forward as they tried to find a route back into the game, but the west Mayo side could find no way past a resolute Ballinrobe defensive unit.
The South Mayo side very nearly added the insurance goal late on; however, Caitlin Cummins saw her angled drive fly narrowly off target.
Overall, it was a terrific team display by Ballinrobe and the red and white can take plenty of positives from this performance.
