A Mayo student has won the gold medal for Biology at the Irish Olympiad of Experimental Science (IrEOES).

Fifth-year student at St Colman’s College, Claremorris, Dara Morley was given the award at a competition at Dublin City University (DCU) recently.

The IrEOES is an individual science competition for Transition Year and Fifth-Year students. Dara was one of 83 successful candidates who made it through the first round of the competition which was held online last month. All successful candidates were invited to DCU on Saturday, November 11, to compete in Round 2.

Dara was the overall winner of the biology section of the course. He, along with winners of the Physics and Chemistry sections, will now be invited to participate in practical training in February/March. After a further assessment, the top six students will be selected to represent Ireland at the European Olympiad of Experimental Science.

“Well done Dara on this fantastic achievement and we have no doubt that you have the ability to go on and represent Ireland at EOES,” St Colman’s College wrote on social media.

The late Kevin Prendergast

There was an outpouring on social media following the death of Kevin Prendergast, who passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, November 13.

Originally from Carramack, Tulrahan, Claremorris, Kevin emigrated to Manchester as a young man, and it was there as a musician that he developed a huge following among the Irish emigrant population.

Throughout his career, he sang all over the UK and Ireland.

Over the last five decades Kevin recorded several hugely popular albums like My Home in West and Back to County Mayo, which included songs like Blacksod Bay, I’m Going to California and Let’s Go Back to Mayo.

He wrote and co-wrote many hit songs during his career.

In his later years, he retired from Manchester to Brickens where he enjoyed a happy retirement.

Kevin is predeceased by his parents John Austin and Ann, as well as brothers Sean, Brendan, Tom, Ray and Gerald.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law Marian and Eileen, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives and a large circle of friends.

Funeral Mass was held at St Mary's Church, Logboy on Friday last with burial afterwards in Tulrahan Cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Fundraising appeal

Since the Claremorris ladies team qualified for the All-Ireland Club Junior semi-final (to be played in Claremorris on the weekend of December 2-3), the club has been approached by many people who wish to contribute to the team costs and to support the club.

As time prevents Claremorris LGFA from running their annual fundraising quiz, they have decided to launch an iDonate appeal.

Any donations no matter how small will be appreciated.

You can donate on www.idonate.ie.

Happy birthday to Clár

Best wishes to Clár IRD who celebrated their 30th birthday last Friday.

Clár IRD was formed in 1993 as a response to negative factors such as the closure of Claremorris Bacon Company, but it was also a recognition of the opportunities that can arise from working together to develop the region’s resources, to campaign with one voice and provide a vehicle for positive local development.

As part of the celebrations, Midwest Radio broadcasted live from the Square in Claremorris on Friday morning.

Here’s to the next 30 years.
