The sad passing of Frank Brogan

It was with a great sense of loss and sadness that the community learnt of the sudden passing of Frank Brogan, Gurteenamuck, Knockmore, which took place on Sunday last, July 14, in Mayo University Hospital. His remains reposed at his son Brian and families residence on the Tuesday evening prior to its removal to the Church of Christ the King, Knockmore, on Thursday morning for his 11am Requiem Mass. There the large numbers present heard glowing tributes paid to him during the homily and of his great faith that saw him through the many crosses both he and his family had to bear down the years. Symbols of his life were presented at the altar by his grandchildren at the beginning of Mass.

Keys to his jeep to symbolise his love of driving and catching up with friends and neighbours; a toy cow to symbolise his great love for cattle and farming that was such a great part of his life; his phone which kept him in contact with home and business; a stick, that was always his right hand man; a family photo symbolising how proud he was of all his family and a penknife for opening his bags of nuts, bales etc.

In the eulogy at the end of Mass, his son Anthony recalled many memories of his life and that of the sad passing of family members.

Frank was a member of a family of eight, born to parents the late Paddy and Mary Brogan. He worked in the UK for a while before returning to his native Gurteenamuck where he worked the family farm while also working with Mayo Co Council. He married the love of his life Ann Dunleavy, a close neighbour and they had a family of seven, three boys and four girls. Both worked hard to rear and educate their family. A family that brought them great joy but mixed with great sadness on the passing their young son David, daughters Denise and Orla. In recent years the birth of their eight grandchildren was to bring much joy and happiness to their lives Following Frank's retirement after 40 years service in the council he spent the next 10 years building up the family farm and yard that is of great credit to him today.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, beloved brother, neighbour and friend and will be sadly missed by all of them.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his family at this time; to his beloved wife Ann, daughters Karena and Helen, sons Brian and Anthony, his adored grandchildren, brothers Joe, Michael and John, his sisters Mary, Kathleen, Anne and Bernie, to his many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours and friends. May he now rest in peace.
