Local Notes: Claremorris teens enjoy Foróige Prom Ball

The Transition Year students of Mount Saint Michael enjoyed a trip to Italy, which included the opportunity to explore the cities of Verona and Venice. During their stay, the pupils visited Malcesine Monte Baldo by cable car, took in a boat trip on Lake Garda and enjoyed Gardaland Theme Park.
The TY students also planted trees in McMahon Park alongside members of the Claremorris and District Lions Club. The pupils have been planting sliver birch seeds over the last few years to counter the ash dieback damaging the original ash trees in the park.
A number of fundraisers took place in the school recently. Firstly, the staff and students dressed in pink to fundraise for Breast Cancer Research on May 3. Secondly, members of the school raised €150 for the Claremorris Red Cross by making tea and coffee for their fellow students. Finally, the TY students raised €230 for Down Syndrome Ireland West by having a ‘Lots of Socks Day’.
Little Gem Puppets bring their sweet and simple rendition of the much-loved children’s fairytale
to Claremorris Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, May 19th, at 1pm.This is an interactive Puppet Show where the audience can get involved with the characters and help build the story. Tickets (€6) available to purchase through the box office on 094-9310999.
Tag rugby returns to Claremorris Colts RFC this summer. The series will run from June 12 to July 26 with registration open on the Connacht Rugby website. Entry is €360 per team with a max of 15 players.

There was a winner of the Claremorris GAA 50/50 jackpot on May 5 as Ollie Charles took home the jackpot of €1,286. The winning ticket was sold in Hillside.

St Colman’s College thanked the support they received for their musical -
. The musical took place over three nights in the Claremorris Town Hall and also included a matinee performance.The Claremorris Golf Club have thanked councillors Tom Connolly and Richard Finn for the allocation of General Municipal Allocation (GMA) funding towards the club.
The Golf Club said: “The support and investment provided by these funds are greatly appreciated, serving as a source of assistance for our golf club.”
The Claremorris Drama Group performed the play,
, in the Ballyhaunis Community Hall last Friday and Saturday evening. The Saturday production was in aid of Ballyhaunis LGFA.The drama society also raised €4,400 for Claremorris GAA Bord na nÓg thanks to the staging of their comedy play. The money will be used to support the growing number of underage players in the club.
will take to the stage in Garrymore Hall this Friday, May 17, for a fundraiser in aid of Gortskehy National School. Tickets are €10 - doors open at 7.30pm with the event starting at 8pm.
The outdoor season for athletics began on the weekend of May 4 which saw Claremorris host the under-9 to under-11 Mayo Championship. Claremorris AC had 50 athletes taking part, making it a great day for both participants and spectators.
Claremorris AC congratulated member Ellen Trench who won the Teen 10K at the Mayo.ie Western People Women's Mini-Marathon, which was held in Ballina over the May bank holiday weekend.
Dearbhla Esler-Jennings and family kindly donated a piano to the Claremorris No Name Club.
The club said that they “hope the piano’s new home will see it be used and become a valuable addition to the centre for future members".
The FAI Football Camp returns to Claremorris AFC this July and August. Week one commences on July 8 to July 12 while week two takes place on August 12 to August 16. There will also be goalkeeper camps on the same dates. Book online at www.faifootballcamps.ie.
The Claremorris ladies soccer team enjoyed their first win in the Mayo Women's League thanks to a 1-0 victory over Crossmolina. Cara Higgins hit the all-important winner.
The pupils of Claremorris Boys National School recently enjoyed a culture assembly in the school. The pupils spoke about the 14 nationalities represented in their student community and discussed famous foods from their home countries.
Sophie Pilbrow, a student of Mount Saint Michael Secondary School, claimed first prize in the TY category of the 2024 Green Campus Poetry Pillar Competition. Isabelle Kelly, also of Mount Saint Michael, finished third in the category.
Irish poet Geraldine Mitchell presented the prizes on the day.
Hegarty's Centra Claremorris wished manager Colm all the best as he departs his role. Their Facebook page said: “We are sad to see him leave but wish him all the best for the future. Thank you, Colm.”
The death has occurred of Dariusz Kowalewski, Hilltop Crescent, Claremorris and formerly of Zamosc, Poland. He passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, May 4.
Dariusz will be sadly missed by his parents Krystyna and Andrzej, sisters Beata and Iwona, fiancée Ewa, his children Sara and Adrian, extended family and the wide circle of friends.
May he rest in peace.
Claremorris GAA players were honoured during the recent Connacht Football Final between Mayo and Galway.
The Mayo teams of 1996, 1997 and 1999 that won the Connacht Senior Championship were brought out onto the Salthill pitch.
The Claremorris men on the team were Kevin Beirne and Ger Brady (RIP), who was represented by his nephew Ciarán Forde.
The Claremorris Colts Rugby Football Club’s Annual Awards will take place in the McWilliam Park Hotel on Friday, May 24. This will be the club’s 15th anniversary celebration night. Tickets are available on Eventbee.
Many thanks to all who attended Darkness into Light Claremorris in the early hours of last Saturday morning. Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to bring hope to people who have been impacted by suicide.
The Western Hotel will host the Claremorris Summer Singles, commencing this Friday, May 17.
There will be four weekly competitions, capped at 32 players, in a round-robin format. Finals night to take place on Friday, June 21.
