Ballintubber GAA lotto jackpot stood at €8,100 on Sunday night, September 20. 13, 17, 22 and 29 were the numbers drawn and there was no jackpot winner. Consolation prizes went to Gavin Roache, Liz Hogan, Peter Touhy, Dan Loftus, Emily Philbin and Evelyn Dowd. The lotto jackpot stood at €8,200 for last Sunday night’s draw.
On Tuesday evening, September 22, Ballintubber U17 side and Westport played out a 2-10 to 1-13 draw in Clogher pitch.

There was no winner of the jackpot in the Ballyglass lotto draw held on Monday, September 22, in the clubhouse. The numbers drawn were 3, 8, 13 and 19. Nobody matched 3 numbers. Ballyglass Active Age Group will attend the “Age Strong, Live Long” event in the Great National Hotel, Ballina on October 1. This is an event which promotes healthy ageing, wellbeing and connection and features practical information, inspiring talks, interactive activities and lots of helpful advice. An expert panel will discuss ways to stay well, maintain independence, manage medications safely and support physical and cognitive health as we age. This event is supported by Healthy Mayo and Mayo County Council, and it will run from 10.30 to 4pm. The Lough Carra Catchment Association (LCCA) invites all members of the community to attend a public meeting on this Tuesday, September 29, at 8pm in Belcarra Community Centre (F23 HY58).
This meeting will feature a presentation from Caoimhe Hickey, Geological Survey Ireland (GSI), who will provide an update on the recently completed Lough Carra Groundwater Study, undertaken as part of the Lough Carra LIFE Project.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about ongoing work in the Lough Carra catchment, hear the latest findings, and engage with local projects that are helping to protect and enhance our unique environment.

The death has taken place of Walter Carter, Mountdaisy, Castlebar and formerly of Killawalla, Westport. Walter was in his 91st year and he passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20, at Mayo University Hospital, in the presence of his family. He was predeceased by his wife Frances (née Morahan) who died in 2021, also predeceased by his parents Thomas and Bridget (née Prendergast), his brothers Michael and Fr Seamus, his sisters Sr Sarah, Kitty O’Brien and Mary Brady.
Walter had a great love for the Irish language and Irish culture. He was a fluent Irish speaker and in his later years he enjoyed TG4 and Radio na Gaeltachta. He was a talented sportsman in his youth and played handball and football with Ballintubber Football Club. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them swimming and playing Gaelic football and rugby. Breaffy GAA Club extended sincere sympathy to his grandson and Breaffy player, Niall Carter and the Carter family on their bereavement.
Walter will be deeply regretted and never forgotten by his daughters Marie Carter Lamb (UK) and Jacqueline, his sons Walter (Mountdaisy), Michael (Kildare) and Francis (Mountdaisy), his grandchildren, his brothers Tommy, Seanie, Peter and his sisters Evelyn Staunton, Sr. Bridget Ann, Bernadette Burke, Martha Carter and Ann Carter, his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and his many friends and neighbours to whom sincere condolences are tendered.
Walter’s remains reposed in Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar on Wednesday, September 23, from 5pm concluding with prayers at 7pm. His funeral arrived at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar on Thursday, September 24, at 10.45am for Funeral Mass at 11am followed by removal to Shannon Crematorium for service at 4pm. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Congratulations to the Partry Athletic FC U12 girls who were recently crowned Division 2 league winners after a 3-0 win over Knock Kiltimagh Utd in Partry. The girls played unbelievable all year winning 8 games along with 2 draws to finish on an impressive 26 points in their quest for the league. The determination and hard work by the whole squad have made this happen and the club couldn’t be prouder of these talented girls. There was a deep pale of sadness about Breaffy village and the GAA community county-wide and beyond at the news on Tuesday evening last of the passing of Seamus Tuohy. Seamus was not just a County GAA Charman in this historic year 2026, he was first and foremost a mainspring of his family, a dear friend and solid rock to many who knew and respected his immense dedication to Mayo GAA, his local club and community in Breaffy and his family whom he loved deeply. His passing is a tragic blow to his wife Marie and their family and the many interests he pursued with vigour and dedication.
A civic reception for the Mayo team due to be held on Friday last was postponed as a mark of respect to the Tuohy family. Seamus worked as assistant nursing director with Mayo Mental Health Service before his retirement. He also had farming interests, and he had a particular love of Connemara ponies. Sincere condolences are extended to his grieving family, siblings and all who mourn his passing. (See Obituary).
It is a hugely proud occasion for everyone in Breaffy GAA Club as club and county goalkeeper, Jack Livingstone has been nominated for a PWC Football All-Star. After an incredible first season in the green above the red, it is wonderful to see Jack’s splendid performances recognised on the All-Star list of nominations. From Breaffy GAA pitch to Croke Park, Jack has represented the club with distinction. Congratulations to him, and to all the Mayo players who have received All-Star nominations after a truly historic season for the county.

It was a busy recent Thursday for Balla Leaving Cert students, who were given the opportunity to travel to the RDS to attend both the Higher Options and WorldSkills events. The day provided students with lots of valuable information and inspiration as they explored their future options and gained greater clarity around potential career paths.

His latest publication, Clocha ar mo Phaidrín is published in conjunction with Coiste Dúiche Mhaigh Eo of Conradh na Gaeilge. This is Máirtín’s fourth publication dating back to the beginning of the New Millenium. On This Day in Mayo, was published to wide acclaim in 2023. His latest publication, as Gaeilge arís, deals with a wide variety of topics from history to folklore, current affairs locally, nationally and internationally, nature and the arts and much more besides. Clocha ar mo Phaidrín will be launched by ex MEP and TD, Jim Higgins, at this year’s Wild Atlantic Words Festival on Tuesday, October 6, at 7pm and all are welcome to attend.
