Ballinrobe Golf Club Ladies Challenge Trophy team which finished in third place in a Connacht final on July 11.
Ballinrobe Golf Club held a mixed scramble competition on Thursday evening, August 1, and the results are as follows: 1st, Niall Staunton, Caroline Joyce, Pat McDermott, and Patrick Simons (26.2); 2nd, Dan Eastop, Lisa Biggins, Angela Murphy, and Chris Halloway (27.3); 3rd, Padraic O’Connor, Agnes O’Connor, David Slattery, and John Biggins (27.7); 4th, Joe O’Donnell, Mary Farragher, John Cradock, and Evan Moran (29.0); 5th, Michael Yeats, Phyllis Lee, Billy McGrath, and Brid de Barra (29.2). The competition was kindly sponsored by the Bowers Bar and Restaurant.
Well done to the Ballinrobe Ladies Challenge Trophy team who finished in an impressive third place in the Connacht final, which was held in Ballyhaunis Golf Club, on July 11.
Ballinrobe Musical Society will stage the much-loved 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' as their annual show for February 16-22, 2025. Based on the Victor Hugo novel and hit Disney film, this chorus-driven show features several magnificent choral numbers and a captivating story that will appeal to audiences of every age. Information on auditions for the show will be published on the society's social media platforms in the coming weeks. New members are welcome.

The death has taken place of Josephine (Josie) Connaughton, Convent Road, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. She was predeceased by her parents Elizabeth and Thomas, sisters Breda Murphy (Waterford), Marie McGrath (Cork), brother Vincent (Boston), niece Sara Connaughton (Boston), nephew Jarlath McGrath (Cork).
She is deeply regretted by her loving family, sister Bernie Kelleher, brothers Jarlath and PJ, brothers-in-law Tim McGrath, Denis Kelleher and Oliver Murphy, sisters-in-law Elizabeth, Mary and Bridie (Boston), her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. Burial took place on Monday, July 29, in the New Cemetery, Ballinrobe. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
Next weekend sees the eagerly awaited first round of the Mayo senior and intermediate club championships. Ballinrobe will commence their Group Three campaign with a difficult away assignment against Ray Dempsey’s Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin side. The aforementioned tie is scheduled to take place next Saturday, August 17, and with throw-in at 7pm. The other fixture in the group will take place the following day and will see Kilmaine entertain Kiltane, with that clash due to throw-in at 3pm.
Also on Sunday and at the same time, The Neale return to intermediate championship action when they face an away tie against Ardnaree Sarsfields in Group Four, which also has a 3pm throw-in time.
The Lake District Athletic Club, Ballinrobe, wish Ballinrobe native Oisin Joyce the very best of luck at the U20 World Javelin Championships, which will be held in Lima, Peru later this month. There was great excitement in the town of Ballinrobe when news broke last week that Oisin has been selected to represent Ireland at this prestigious event where he will face some of the world’s top athletes. The talented youth posted a personal best of 73.72m last June, which placed him fourth on the Irish all-time list.
The action for Oisin Joyce gets underway in Lima with the javelin men’s event which will take place on Tuesday, August 27. The final will take place on Thursday, August 29. Oisin is wished the very best of luck from all involved in the Lake District Athletic Club, as well as your many friends and supporters in Ballinrobe.

Ballinrobe Kayak Club was delighted with the turnout for their ‘try kayaking’ event which was held during the Ballinrobe Festival week. The event was held in the Bowers and had participants from a variety of ages take part in what was a fun and social event.

The ‘Her Outdoors’ week (August 12 to 18) is full of exciting outdoor activities and adventures for women across the country, encouraging more females to embrace the outdoors and experience the numerous physical and mental benefits it offers. The club held its weekly 50/50 draw in Fitzpatrick’s Bar, Main Street, on Sunday, August 4, with Emma O’Toole the winner of €401.
Ballinrobe Rugby Club hosted a two day Connacht Rugby Summer Camp at The Green, from Monday, July 29, to Tuesday, July 30. The camp was for children aged 6-12. There was also a special surprise in store for the children as Connacht rugby stars JJ Hanrahan and Sean O’Brien paid a visit to the camp held at The Green. Overall, an enjoyable two days was had by the participants.

Organisers of the Annual Islandeady Fun Run/Walk 5k and10k extend thanks to all who , helped took part and supported the event recently. All money raised from this event will be donated to Islandeady Community Council and Islandeady GAA/LGFA. This event is gaining strength from year to year and the community are delighted to welcome people and groups from surrounding areas to join them catch up with neighbours and friends.
Despite the forecast for bad weather a huge crowd attended the Annual Cemetery Mass on Sunday, August 4. Though the rain started around the same time as Fr Chris and Fr Chas commenced Mass at 11am, this did not dampen the willingness and enthusiasm with which so many people gathered with family and friends to remember their loved ones who had passed before them.
Fr Chris extended thanks to everyone who had worked behind the scenes over the previous few weeks to get the cemeteries ready. The cemetery weekend offertory collection goes towards maintenance and improvements at the cemeteries.

A new 6 week programme called Survive and Thrive that helps cancer survivors adapt to the ‘new normal’ will take place in the Mayo Cancer Support Centre on Tuesday, September 10, from 6.15pm – 9pm.
