Key Mayo road has deteriorated from 'first to third world route'

Cllr Neil Cruise is demanding that Irish Water takes action immediately.

A local councillor has claimed that the N58 road linking Ballyvary to Foxford has deteriorated from "a first to a third world" route, writes Joan Geraghty.

Welcoming the fact that the Ballina bypass is "moving along well" and also the appointment of consultants to the Mount Falcon stretch on the N26 between Ballina and Foxford, Fine Gael Cllr Neil Cruise told last week's meeting of Mayo County Council: “The time has come to do some work on the N58. It is like going from a first to a third world now.”

Cllr Cruise said there was no dominant town in Mayo but three virtually equal ones (Ballina, Castlebar and Westport), adding: “I think the best thing is to connect them all up and it is time to put the N58 back on the map.”

He said that a modern road on the N17 from Donegal to Kerry was long promised and called on the Government to finally deliver it.

“We need that dual carriageway all the way and through this county."

Cllr Cruise also called for the development of the long-awaited Western Rail Corridor, which he said was crucial to the future growth of Ireland West Airport in Knock.

"Fingal Council is not allowing Dublin Airport passenger numbers to increase. If Knock had another one million it would flourish because it is properly run.

"And if we had a proper high-speed rail link into Knock Airport and people were able to get around the country easily, it doesn’t really matter where people land. So we have to start shouting for Knock, the Western Rail Corridor and the dual carriageway north to south," said the Foxford-based councillor.
