Girl power wins national award for Mayo school

Athletics Ireland has named St Joseph’s Secondary School in Foxford as its ‘Girls Squad School of the Month’.

A Mayo secondary school has been honoured by Athletics Ireland for the work it is doing to promote athletics among its female student population.

The sport’s governing body in the country has named St Joseph’s Secondary School in Foxford as its ‘Girls Squad School of the Month’.

The girls squad is an initiative of Athletics Ireland that aims to make athletics more enjoyable for girls and to keep them involved in its various disciplines for longer.

Teachers at St Joseph’s, Aileen McNamara and Michaela Walsh, a multiple national title holder for the shot put, are helping to lead the way, with the award presented in particular recognition of the school’s ‘Colour Run’ which created a fun and safe space for girls to get active together, focusing on enjoyment and participation rather than competition.
