Members of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District are to extend an invitation to recently-elected President of Ireland Catherine Connolly to attend a civic reception in her honour.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Brendan Mulroy raised the matter at the December meeting of the municipal district, telling his colleagues that there was a strong tradition of inviting the President of Ireland to the area.
“We have always invited previous presidents, so I ask the Cathaoirleach Cllr Peter Flynn to be the first to invite our new president for a civic reception, and to open up the county in doing so. We always had a great relationship with previous presidents, so I propose we invite President Connolly to a civic reception here and for the itinerary to include visits around the municipal district, including to Belmullet, Achill and Louisburgh on the day.”
Cllr Chris Maxwell seconded the proposal, which was unanimously passed.
