Charity the real winner at Tom Waldron 5k

Athletics: The Tom Waldron Run/Walk took place over a 5k course at Claremorris on the evening of Tuesday, August 13. The run was in aid of the charity ‘Protect The Children Of The World’, which helps alleviate poverty by the advancement of education for the benefit of children withdrawn from forced labour.

The men’s race was won by Cathal Kennedy in a time of 17:33 while finishing second from the nearby Lake District AC was Shane Horan in 18:01. The Mayo AC pairing of Thomas Reilly and Art Maguire were third and fourth in 18:44 and 19:15 respectively while under-16 runner Shane Davoren was fifth overall in a time of 19:29.

It was another under-16 athlete who was the overall winner of the women’s race as Ellen Trench crossed the line in 19:28, beating the Mayo AC pair of Eimear Fitzmaurice and Lorraine McNulty into second and third place respectively, with Eimear clocking 20:36 and Lorraine 21:27. In fourth place was Elaine Lynch in 22:13 while U16 competitor Roisín Steed Duffy was fifth overall in 22:24.

The overall winners were presented with the Tom Waldron Cups.
