Calls for Town Regeneration Officer

Main Street, Castlebar.
There are calls for a Town Regeneration Officer to be appointed in Castlebar.
Independent councillor Harry Barrett issued the plea in a bid to kickstart Castlebar’s town centre and ensure proper planning and town renewal.
"I want to see Mayo County Council appoint a Town Regeneration Officer to help lead the revival of Castlebar town centre,” said Cllr Barrett.
The newly-elected councillor was speaking in advance of the annual general meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District tomorrow (Wednesday). He claimed the county town was at a ‘crossroads’.
"Castlebar is at a crossroads in its development and we have to get the plan right for the next 10 years. I have made initial contact with the council about having a Town Regeneration Officer appointed to help us lead discussions in terms of any new town plan. We have to have a qualified person leading the discussions, bringing best practice to the table.
"Castlebar needs a Town Centre First approach that will bring people back into the town centre again, living and working and spending. This will help local businesses and help sustain our local community," said Cllr Barrett.
He urged Castlebar to follow the lead of other towns like Sligo and prioritise town centre renewal and sustainable planning.
