Call for election poster ban in Mayo

There are calls for election posters to be banned in Mayo

Mayo Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere is calling for election ‘pole’ posters to be banned in the county ahead of this year’s local elections.

The Castlebar-based councillor is bring a motion on the issue before his afternoon’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council.

He has urged Mayo County Council ban the erection of pole poster for upcoming referendums and elections throughout the county.

Cllr Deere argues that the practice is outdated and bad for the environment. He contends that other countries have banned the practice and the advent of social media no longer necessitates their use.

“They are unsightly and bad for the environment,” said Cllr Deere.

He said they can cause traffic and health and safety issues should they come free in windy conditions.

“You don’t need your picture on a pole. Get out on the ground and do the work,” Cllr Deere added.
