A Mayo local election candidate is calling for a ban on the opening of new vape shops in the county.

Independent candidate Harry Barrett said he is concerned about the surge in vape shops in Mayo and called on authorities to take a stand to protect public health. Mr Barrett said concerns have been raised with him at the doors regarding the lax enforcement of age restrictions in these establishments, prompting his calls for immediate action.

"There is growing concern that underage young people in our towns may be accessing vaping products without proper age vetting, posing a significant risk to their health and wellbeing.

"The health problem was highlighted by Professor Dónal O'Shea at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland recently. Professor O'Shea emphasised the potentially dire consequences of long-term vape usage, citing concerns over the development of future cancers and cardiovascular ailments," said Mr Barrett.

"In light of these findings, I am calling for a complete ban on the opening of new vape shops in Mayo and I am advocating for enhanced enforcement measures to ensure compliance with age restrictions. It is crucial that the health and safety of young people is safeguarded against the potential hazards associated with vaping," he added.
