Ballina election candidate raises speeding concerns

Sinn Fein candidate Antonio Cafolla has pledged to tackle road safery issues in Ballina.
A Mayo election candidate is concerned about the speed of cars in the vicinity of housing estates.
Sinn Fein election candidate Antonio Cafolla said while canvassing in Ballina the issue of cars speeding through the town has emerged as a major issue for local residents.
“The speed of cars on the main roads as motorists attempt to exit housing estates is a real safety concerns,” said the Ballina-based candidate.
“It can be extremely dangerous for drivers attempting to get out of housing estates as cars on the main roads appear to travelling much faster than the speed limits. It may be the case that speed limits in these areas are too high,” said Mr Caffola.
“If elected I will look to have the speed limits around or housing estates reduced or get other speed reduction measures introduced,” he added.
Mr Caffola was recently selected as the party’s second candidate in the Ballina area.
He has been involved in community activism in Ballina for many years through his work as a steward and then a director with the Ballina Salmon Festival.
Antonio was involved in setting up Ballina Community Radio, where he and another founding member studied radio production in order to get a broadcast licence. Antonio also volunteers with the Ballina Community Clean Up and helps to coach girls’ gaelic football and soccer.
If elected, Antonio will campaign for safer and more accessible roads for walkers, cyclists and other road users in the town and surrounding villages. He also pledges to fight tirelessly for local businesses so that the town centre can thrive.
