Ballina Cathaoirleach calls for ceasefire between Israel and Hamas

Cllr Seamus Weir
A local councillor has said Mayo County Council should support the Taoiseach’s call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Cllr Seamus Weir said the Council cannot condone what is currently happening in the Middle East and called for them to support a recent call made by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar calling for a ceasefire.
“This is genocide, we see shocking scenes on the news every evening, the slaughter of men, women and children,” he said.
“The Taoiseach spoke very strongly on this. We should be supporting the government in asking for a ceasefire.”
Cllr Jarlath Munnelly said the MD should write to the office of the Taoiseach to confirm their support for a ceasefire.
“Everyone wants to see the killing come to an end. There is currently no peace process ongoing in the Middle East,” he said.
All councillors present voiced support for this proposal.
