Popular Ballaghaderreen photographer dies

The news of the death of Michael McCormack, Main Street, Ballaghaderreen, on Sunday, August 20, in Mayo University Hospital, was greeted with great sadness and deep shock. Michael or Mick McCormack as he was better known was the local photographer in town for many years.

Michael was born on August 28, 1963, the eldest of a family of three children born to Phyllis (nee Morley) and Patrick McCormack. The other members are brother John and sister Marie.

Michael attended the De La Salle Christian Brothers school and on completing this attended St Nathys College in town. Michael worked as storeman for the OPW in Ballaghaderreen and later worked in construction in London and also in the south of Spain. Michael had one burning ambition to be a sports press photographer and he returned to Ballaghaderreen to pursue his childhood ambition. Michael worked for the local press for many years capturing happy and sad events.

He was a dedicated Roscommon football fan or a Rossie as it became known and nothing gave him more pride than to be pitch side in Hyde Park in Roscommon especially on Connaught final day if Mayo and Roscommon were playing. He took countless pictures and sent them on to be published in the local papers. As a personality Mick had few equals. He was very approachable and his kindness knew no bounds, a character and story teller like no other, very humble, and the practice of his faith was very important to him. Mickl had a kind word for everyone and regardless of the job in hand had always time for a chat.. in short a peoples person.

At his removal the gathering was huge and representative of people who came to pay their respects to a very popular person. Michael reposed in Sharkeys Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 22, and removal took place through the streets of Ballaghaderreen which he knew so well to St Nathys Cathedral for Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday, August 23, just a few days short of his 60th birthday, followed by interment in Kilcolman cemetery, Ballaghaderreen.

Pre-deceased by his father Patrick (Pa), Michael will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his heartbroken family, his mother Phyllis (Phyll), brother John, sister Maria Walsh (Renmore, Galway), nephew Rory, nieces Laura, Aoife, Michelle, Ciara, Niamh and Dearbhla, grandnephews and nieces Jack, Eva, Alison, Kate, Conor, Caden, Luke, Léana, Thea, Elliot and Evan, brother-in-law Gabriel, sister-in-law Patricia, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends. May he rest in peace. We offer our deepest sympathy to all who mourn his passing, and may God comfort you all.
