Ballagh’ regeneration can ‘boost businesses’

A multi-million-euro town centre regeneration in Ballaghaderreen will improve the town for the better and give local businesses a big boost, according to a former councillor.
Michael Scally, a member of the Ballaghaderreen Town Team, has said the €4.5 million project will bring a multitude of benefits.
The commencement of work on the development moved a step closer recently as a tender notice seeking the services of a contractor for the project was advertised on the Government’s e-tender website.
The objective of the public realm works is to make the town more attractive and welcoming and to improve the functionality of the urban area for residents, street traders, and businesses.
As part of the project, ten slender trees will be planted to improve the visual enhancement, while several benches will be installed in the Square to allow visitors to relax.
Mr Scally insisted many organisations believe the project will greatly enhance the appearance of the town and tackle the traffic congestion which is a “traffic hazard for both drivers and pedestrians alike”.
“If you’re going to enhance a town property price will increase because there will be new businesses coming in,” he added.
“Heavy lorries must now use the Sligo Road entrance to deliver their goods to the factories on the old N5 Road and the new one-way traffic flow for Cathedral St and College St will eliminate the present chaos.”
Mr Scally said designated parking places adjacent to Bank of Ireland and the chemist shop will be provided for people with impaired mobility and alternative parking will be provided near the town centre.
Local Sinn Féin Councillor Michael Mulligan believes up to 72 car parking spaces will be lost, although Roscommon County Council puts the figure at 37, and that will negatively affect businesses.
