Another candidate joins Ballina election race

File photo dated 06/05/10 of a voter placing a ballot paper in the ballot box, as around 14,000 people did not vote after being unable to show an accepted form of photo ID during England's local elections, according to the Electoral Commission.
A 13th candidate has entered the election race in the Ballina Local Electoral Area.
Joe Doocey, from Knocksbarrett, has announced he will run as an Independent candidate.
Mr Doocey has described himself as an ‘anti-corruption’ candidate and shared on social media a list of his objectives if he is elected. These include the "provision of housing to every Irish person, exposing corruption in communities and organisations such as An Garda Síochána and the abolition of [child and family agency] Tusla".
He enters a crowded field in the Ballina LEA. Those declared so far include Annie May Reape, Michael Loftus and David Alexander for Fianna Fail, Jarlath Munnelly, John O’Hara and Hugh Rouse for Fine Gael, Una Morris and Antonio Cafolla for Sinn Féin and Independent candidates Mark Duffy, Joe Faughnan, Willie Nolan, Keith Howley, in addition to Joe Doocey. Nominations for the local election close on May 18 at 12 noon.
