GAA: Charlestown back at their best

CHARLESTOWN 1-18, ORANMORE-MAREE 1-10
A superb second half display erased the memory of earlier Charlestown mediocrity at Flanagan Park, Ballinrobe on Wednesday evening last.
Lively and focused Oranmore-Maree posed plenty of problems for the Mayo side in the first half, and their two point interval advantage, 1-5 to 0-6, could well have been greater.
Indicative of the Charlestown concern was the introduction of county player Aidan Higgins early in the second quarter, and the step was a worthwhile one, as the subsequent exchanges unfolded.
Supporters of the county champions had every reason to wear broad smiles in the second half.
Sweeping moves upfield evoked reminders of last years highly successful campaign, and inaccuracy was never a bother, as points were lofted over from here, there and everywhere.
Excellent team work was at the core of the Charlestown upsurge, and it manifested itself in outstanding individual contributions from a very energetic Dermot Higgins, Aidan Higgins, accurate Richard Haran, Donal Healy, Sean Higgins, Brian O'Connell, Enda Casey and Sean Leneghan.
Oranmore-Maree were overpowered by Charles-town's brilliance in the second half, and players like the menacing Enda Earls, Richard Murray, Michael Quinn, Mark Kelly, hampered by a knock, David Eignor, Derek Cullinane and Brian Cannon could no longer exert their earlier influence.
Neutral onlookers, keen to see a competitive encounter, would have found the first half more rewarding.
As already ackowledged, Oranmore/ Maree played the more enterprising football during this phase of the action, but their opponents never allowed them to express their superiority in a scoring context.
Deadlock prevailed on three occasions in the opening nineteen minutes and the Galway representatives were unlucky not to get a goal in the 15th. minute.
An incisive swoop from the right corner by Enda Earls deserved a score, but the upright impeded the goalbound flight of the ball.
The goal eventually materialised in the 28th. minute, not without some effort being expended, it must be added.
Owen Pender and Enda Earls failed in their endeavours to get the ball into the net, and, in the end, the trusty fist of Cathal Furey did the needful.
This score gave Oranmore-Maree a four point lead, their biggest of the game, but it had dwindled to two by the interval, following a brace of points from Dermot Higgins.
An Oranmore-Maree point from a free by David Eignor in the 32nd. minute did not foreshadow what was to ensue.
Charlestown players, interval promptings still ringing in their ears, began to walk tall, and Richard Haran put two frees to fruitful use.
A foul on Brendan Towey, following a threatening run by Dermot Higgins, one of many, led to a penalty award, but it did not yield the anticipated outcome.
The kick by Aidan Higgins was stopped by Dominic Joyce, the vigilant opposing goalkeeper, and the rebound came off the crossbaar. Midfielder Derek Cullinane gathered the clearance, and pointed for Oranmore Maree.
The score failed to check the Charlestown momentum, in reality, it only fuelled it still further.
The Mayo side now proceded to parade all its talents, and in a glorious seventeen-minute spell, the umpire had cause to hoist the white flag on ten occasions.
Richard Haran kicked five of the pointns, and Donal Healy, Colm Horkan, Sean Higgins (2) and Dermot Higgins all had an input.
The hour was on its last legs when Oranmore Maree were able to counter with points from David Eignor (2) and Enda Earls.
