LATE WILLIE GOLDEN Widespread regret and genuine sadness was evoked as the news of the death of Mr. Willie Golden, Oak Grove, Ballaghaderreen, and formerly of Creggane, Edmondstown filtered through. Willie could aptly be described as a true gentleman, a devout Catholic, a hard worker, and a person of immense compassion. Willie was no stranger to crosses and difficult times and during his lifetime he experienced many times of great sorrow. One of these times was when he lost his first wife, Molly in the 1960s when Willie was left with bringing up two sons Richard and Tom. This was a very difficult task in the 1960s when money or amenities were not as affluent as they are now. In 1975, Willie embarked on a new chapter in life when he married Mrs. Kathleen Cooney (Gallagher) of Pulboy, Ballaghaderreen. Kathleen and Willie were the perfect couple and were very happy, but alas this was not to last for long as Kathleen fell ill and died in May 1977. This was a great sense of loss and shock to Willie and his sons and to Kathleen's family, relatives, neighbours and friends. But it did not stop there as four years ago Willie was to suffer yet another terrible cross when his youngest son Tom was to die also. Willie, then alone and advanced in age, decided to sell the family farm at Creggane and move into Oak Grove, Ballaghaderreen where he was to live out the rest of his life. Willie had then to contend with many sicknesses during these years. In his younger years, Willie worked for Roscommon County Council where he held position as ganger. He was very highly thought of in this position and all who worked with Willie were high in praise of his gentlemanly behaviour towards staff and officials alike. On Saturday 28th September, Willie was called to his Eternal Reward. He was in his 80s. Friends, relatives and family gathered at the Sharkey Funeral Home on Monday 30th September to bid a fond farewell to a dear friend. Following solemn Requiem Mass on 1st October, Willie was laid to rest in Kilcolman Cemetery. For Willie now pain is now over and may his gentle soul rest in peace. Sincere sympathy to his brother Vincent
