East Midlands air route proves success for Knock
By: Anna-Marie Flynn

THE new flight route from Knock to Nottingham East Midlands, announced just one month ago, is already enjoying high sales.

As part of the ongoing expansion of Ireland West Airport, Knock, Ryanair announced the new route between the Mayo airport and Nottingham East Midlands on October 5th and seats have been in demand since.

The move is predicted to bring an extra •8million in tourism spend to the West and North West.

The positive news came just over two months after EasyJet and Ryanair withdrew daily flights to Gatwick, London, from the international airport, causing severe disappointment throughout the region.

The new Midlands service, which is scheduled to run four times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, will commence on February 27th 2007 and will compliment Ryanair’s existing daily scheduled flights from Ireland West Airport Knock into London Luton and London Stansted airports. Booking came into effect immediately following the announcement at a press conference in the airport terminal on Thursday last, October 5th.

Following the announcement, Ryanair Communications Executive, Lorna Farren said that the provider wished to reaf-firm its commitment to Knock airport saying, “Ryanair is delighted to announce this new route from Ireland West Knock to Nottingham East Midlands. Ryanair is committed to increasing access to Ireland West, and this new route will provide an entirely new catchment area for tourism to the region, providing 25,000 additional tourist visitors per annum.”

The new service is expected to bring in the region of 60,000 additional passengers per annum through Ireland West Airport, Knock.

Nottingham East Midlands Airport is a highly populated area of central England. Situated 13 miles south of Nottingham, 17 miles southeast of Derby and 19 miles northwest of Leiceser, it is a gateway to the midlands.

Welcoming the new route, Managing Director of Ireland West Airport, Knock, Liam Scollan stated, “We are actively striving to expand further the Airport’s network of scheduled flight services into the UK and the addition of this new route operated by Ryanair will provide a valuable service to our holiday and business passengers both in our region and in Britain.” The new route is set to generate considerable revenue for the western region. “Tourists on this route will fill 113,000 extra bed-nights in our accommodation sector and bring in an estimated 8million in additional tourism spend to the West and North West region,” added Mr Scollan.

The good news did not end there however as Ryanair also announced an offer of 15,000 seats on their three routes from Ireland West Airport, Knock priced at just •2.99 (oneway excluding taxes and charges) on www.ryanair. com as way of celebrating the new route.

Annette Kearney, Marketing and Communications Officer with Ireland West Airport Knock was also present at the launch and expressed her delight at the new flight service.

“We were very disappointed with the news that two of our providers were withdrawing services to Britain but this new route promises to have huge benefits for the region,” she said.

Flights are currently available on www.ryanair. com
