Claremorris men’s charity beard shave
By: Cróna Esler

On Saturday next (April 22), four well-known South Mayo men will be doing their bit for charity in a beard-shaving bonanza that will see some faces seeing the light of day for the first time in almost three decades!
As Claremorris man Ivan Dixon prepares to travel to Kenya on the Suas Volunteer Programme, the young student was anxious to come up with a somewhat unusual fundraising drive and decided that a ‘Shavey Wavey’ event would be sure to draw in the crowds. The event will take place on Saturday next at 8pm in The Country Club in Hollybrook.
The first beard to go under the knife will be that of local veterinary surgeon John Dixon, whose long-standing beard has not let his baby-face see the light of day for some 30 odd years.
The similar vintage beard of Hugh McNamara will also succumb to the shears and the upper lip of moustached-mechanic Tom McHugh will soon be on show for one and all to see.
A friend of Ivan’s, young Thomas Higgins, has also agreed to offer up his facial hair for the charity event and so Thomas’ less mature ruggedness will also be sheared on the night.
In order to be able to embark on this mission, Ivan is required to raise €2,950 which will cover a donation to the partner school, as well as his flights, accommodation and pre-departure training.
Suas is a registered charity CHY 14931. Further information on the Suas Volunteer Programme can be found on www.suas.ie. For details on the beard shave, Ivan can be contacted at 085 7077574.
