Saoirse’s adventure
By: Michael Gallagher
The imagination of a Westport schoolgirl will be celebrated in Dublin this week when the Texaco Children’s Art awards are handed out. Saoírse O’Reilly a fourth class student at St. Patrick’s National School will collect her award at a function in The Burlington tomorrow (Wednesday). There were many and varied entries from the school with all manner of artistic license being taken with the entries and School Principal, Bridget Gilboy is delighted that the adjudicators noticed Saoírse’s talent. “A lot of our students sent off entries and they were all of a very high standard but Saoírse’s entry of a ‘wacky face collage’ really caught the eye of the judges. We’re all delighted for her and it’s nice to see imagination being rewarded.” The collage, which featured a face wearing sunglasses encircled with green material and with a jellyfish as a bow-tie also impressed Saoírse’s class teacher Ms. Cathríona Lyons. “All of the girls produced wonderful work and many of them came very close to winning awards I’m sure but there was something about Saoirse’s entry which made it stand out. It was colourful, imaginative and eye-catching and really deserved to be noticed. All the girls in the class are very good at art and they create some wonderful pieces so I’m not surprised that one of them won a prize. They used all sorts of materials in the project and let their imagination run riot to come up with some wonderful entries.
“We’re all delighted for Saoírse but she has always been very artistic and is probably taking after her mother Gráinne who is very talented in that field. We hope that she will have a great day in Dublin and we’re looking forward to hearing all about it when she gets back.’ The artist herself was delighted with the news that she had been successful and was looking forward to her trip to the capital. “Art and PE are my favourite subjects and we all worked hard for the competition so I was really excited to hear the news that my entry had won a prize. I can’t wait to go to Dublin and I’m looking forward to telling my friends all about it later in the week.”
