Eire Og deliver in style as Under 16 Cup comes west along the road

Eire Og were crowned Roscommon Under-16 (Division Two) champions when they turned in a stylish display to end the ambitions of Strokestown at Elphin. And while the final score of 7-8 to 1-10 did scant justice to the efforts of Strokestown, there was no disputing the fact that the honours were richly deserved by Eire Og.
The Eire Og club, centred around the Loughglynn and taking in Lisacul and parts of Gorthaganny, currently has a fine batch of young players and there was a dogged determination to bring the cup back to the area on this occasion.
It was an evening to remember for Vincent Walshe from Erritt who recorded a personal tally of 4-2, thus making a huge contribution to the Eire Og victory. It was Walshe who fired home the first goal after some determined work by Mark O’Brien.
With Barry Nolan orchestrating matters from midfield, Walshe and O’Brien became the pivotal figures in the Eire Og attack and Mark O’Brien consolidated their position with he riffled home his team’s second goal. Eire Og led by 2-5 to 1-3 at the interval.
While Strokestown cut the margin to four points on the restart, they were soon rocked by a double strike from the ‘on song’ Vincent Walshe and this opened up a comfortable gap for Eire Og who grew in confidence all over the field.
The game was now drifting away from Strokestown and Eire Og, sensing a comfortable win, pressed home their advantage with further goals from Christopher Dunne, Barry Nolan and Vincent Walshe.
There were jubilant scenes when Seamus Nugent from the Roscommon Minor Board presented the cup to the impressive captain of Eire Og, Barry Nolan.
All in all, an excellent team performance by the Eire Og squad with perhaps special mention for Brian Horan, Barry Nolan, Vincent Walshe, Mark O’Brien and Christy Dunne, as well as for Shane Ganley who came on after 20 minutes and played some fine football in the Eire Og defence. Shane had incurred a serious shoulder injury in the quarter-final of the series. An occasion to savour and cherish for all associated with Eire Og GAA Club.
Eire Og: D, Crawley; N. Horan, D. Regan, S. McDonnell; S. Barron, C. Connaughton, D. Grennan; D. Morgan, B. Nolan (1-2); P. Creighton, C. McKee, C. Dunne (1-1); V. Walshe (4-2), M. O’Brien (1-2), D. Flanagan (0-1). Subs used: S. Ganley for S. McDonnell; I. Swanick for D. Flanagan, C. Hitchens for P. Creighton, J. Hanley for V. Walshe.
CORK POP UP!
Roscommon face a difficult assignment in their senior championship ‘qualifier’ after drawing Cork on Sunday night. This is a major test for Roscommon as Cork are likely to be still ‘smarting’ from the humiliation inflicted on them by Limerick in the first round.
It was expected that Roscommon would host Cork in Hyde Park on Saturday evening but there was a doubt hanging over the venue at the time of these notes going to press. There was some speculation that the Roscommon v Cork game might be part of a double-header at another venue.
Whatever the outcome, Roscommon will need a major improvement if they are to adance to the next round. They defeated Cork in the National League in recent months and will be hoping for another similar display at the weekend.
JACK BURKE, GRANLAHAN
The death took place at the Carewell Nursing Home in Ballyhaunis on the 7th May of Jack Burke, Borrinagh, Granlahan. He was predeceased by his wife Nellie around ten years ago.
Jack was a farmer all his life and took great care of his home, farm yard and land. He was extremely neat and tidy around the place and took a gentle pride in maintaining the place so well.
A hard working and able farmer, Jack had a fine knowledge of the land and the livestock business and was greatly regarded among the local community. He was a pleasant and genial countryman whose neighbourly qualities were much to the fore throughout his life.
Jack enjoyed a good chat and was the best of company. He had a wide knowledge of current affairs and could talk at length on many topics. He was in his 80s and was truly one of the fine “old stock” of the Granlahan area.
Removal took place from Donnellan’s Funeral Home in Ballyhaunis to St. Patrick’s Church, Granlahan with burial in the adjoining cemetery after Requiem Mass.
He is deeply regretted by his sisters Annie Burke (Granlahan) and Mary Cannon (Manchester), sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
CLOONFAD
TRIUMPH
It was celebration tine for Cloonfad United players and supporters when the final whistle sounded in the Roscommon Senior Cup Final at the Curragh Grounds, Ballinasloe. They had just emerged victorious after a 1-nil win over Shiven Rovers in a game that remained in the balance to the final whistle.
Cloonfad held the upperhand for long spells but failed to punish Rovers on a number of occasions when a second goal would have put the issue beyond doubt.
The only goal of the game was scored during the opening half when Declan Costello’s header, following a well directed free by Darren Prendergast, flew past Derek Dowling, the Shiven Rovers goalie.
Favourites from the outset, Cloonfad were by far the more composed team and sprayed the ball around with ease and style, dominating the possession stakes, and seldom giving Shiven any openings at all.
They mounted constant pressure and had a number of near misses before Costello’s header finally broke the deadlock to the relief of the Cloonfad supporters and all associated with the team.
Several other chances fell their way throughout the game and while Aiden O’Boyle did manage to put the ball in the Shiven net 20 minutes into the second half, he was deemed to have been off side.
By then, Cloonfad should have been out of sight. As things transpired, they had to withstand the odd sporadic attack form Shiven Rovers which always presented the possibility of a snap equaliser.
However, the Dermot Burke managed side held out for a fully deserved victory and the Cloonfad contingent had every reason to celebrate their victory as Roscommon and District cup champions.
Declan Costello, Aiden O’Boyle and Darren Prendergast were highly prominent in a Cloonfad team that delighted in being back at the top again.
Cloonfad United: J. Kelly, D. Bermingham, D. Prendergast, D. Costello, A. O’Boyle, M. McGuire, D. Bermingham, J. Mulrennan, B. Kilcourse, J. Burke, K. Reinhardt. Subs: E. Costello for D. Costello, P.J. Moran for K. Reinhardt.
SARAH PAGE, BALLINLOUGH
Mrs. Sarah Page, Clooncundra, Ballinlough, whose death took place recently in Roscommon Hospital, was a popular and esteemed member of the local community. She was formerly Sarah Cregg from Keyfield, Ballinlough and was predeceased by her husband Thomas 26 years ago. She was the last of her generation of the Cregg family.
Sarah and Thomas raised a family of three, two daughters and a son. A lady of gentle and pleasant disposition, Sarah had many noble qualities which she passed on to her family and friends.
Herself and Thomas were farming people and looked after their farm and livestock with the firm commitment of the people of their generation. They knew all about long hours and hard work in the fields and the home.
Sarah’s health began to decline somewhat back in the late 1970s but she never allowed it to dampen her spirits or her ability to engage in lively conversation and follow all that was going on in the region. She loved Mid-West Radio which was a God-send when it came on air back in the mid-1980s and she remained an ever faithful listener right up to her death.
A lady of deep and abiding faith, she had a great devotion to Our Lady of Knock and recited several rosaries every day. Sarah had her own special prayers from down the years and they remained her guiding light on her journey through life. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
Removal took place from Gaynor’s to Castlerea Church with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. Kevin Fallon, Msgr. Dominick Grealy, Fr. Hughie Loftus, Fr. Tommy Burke, Fr. Joe Feeney, and a number of other priests.
She is deeply regretted by her family, Marie, Tom and Veronica, daughter-in-law Ursula, son-in-law Gerard Cummins, grandchildren, great-grandchild, relatives, neighbours and friends.
