Mayo farmers to take part in big tractor protest
By: Orla Hearns

Mayo is one of three counties that will initiate a nationwide relay tractor protest next Monday.
The protest is being organised by the IFA. Mr Michael Biggins, Co Chairman of that organisation, said the Association were calling on all farmers to support them in their objections to the pitiful farming income and to the many negative decisions taken by the Government in respect of farming in their 2003 budget.
The event will start in Ballina on Monday, January 6 at 10.00 a.m. The protest will drive through Foxford at 11.00 a.m., Ballyvary at 11.30 a.m. and Castlebar at noon.
In Castlebar the cavalcade will merge with protesters from Westport (who begin their journey on the Castlebar Road at 11.00 a.m.) From there, both groups will proceed to Balla and the first day of the protest will conclude in Claremorris.
Farmers from the Ballinrobe area will take up the protest at the Cornmarket at 10.00 a.m. the following day, Tuesday. They will pass through Hollymount at 10.30 a.m., Claremorris at 11.00 a.m., Ballyhaunis at noon, Ballinlough at 12.30 p.m. and Castlerea at 1.30 p.m.
Mr Biggins explained that approximately 56 branches of the IFA are expected to participate in the protest in this region. But only a small representation from that group will continue the journey and link up with protesters from the rest of the country on the road to Dublin.
“We would urge all members of the IFA and all farmers to come out and support us,” Mr Biggins said. “There are so many issues effecting farmers that need to be highlighted. Mayo and the West of Ireland in general have been particularly badly hit. Even if farmers do not have a tractor we would still urge them to come our in the cars and support us.”
Anyone interested in helping out with the protest should contact their local IFA branch.
