Barnacarroll woman has narrow escape after cow attack
By: Michael Commins

A sister-in-law of showbiz impressario Louis Walsh had a lucky escape in recent days after being attacked by a cow on the family farm at Mace Upper, Barnacarroll. John (Fallon) Walsh was in the horse stables when she was set upon by a cow.
Joan was rescued from her ordeal by her husband Noel when their five year old daughter alerted him after hearing her mother’s shouts. Joan later went to Castlebar General Hospital for x-rays and attended a chiropractor in the aftermath of her narrow escape.
Says Joan: “I went in to take the cow and calf out of the stables. She had calved about ten days earlier. I was turning them out when she attacked me and got me up against the back wall. I fell down which was lucky for me. She went on her knees and continued to puck me.
“The first time she came over, I went to hit her and she went wild and that was the time she hurted my hip.
“I stayed as calm as I could and she kept moving back and over between the calf and myself. I tried to hold her off with the soles of my boots. I was shouting for Noel and help. Erinn was outside and heard me and went for Noel. He was working late the night before and she told him I was calling him outside.
“I had a mobile phone on me and I tried to ring a few numbers but could get no answer. I managed to get through to my cousin T.J. down the village and he arrived just after Noel came out from the house. Noel got the cow away with the shovel and put her out of the building.”
Joan considers herself lucky to have escaped with some ligament and muscle damage. “For nearly ten minutes I knew my life was in danger. She was between me and the door. If I had panicked at all, she could have killed me. People should never take cows for granted, especially after calving. Even the quietest can turn on you in seconds.”
