Mayo ladies prominent in Galway road race

Mayo AC athletes were very much to the fore in the annual Lough Derg 10 kilometre road race held on Sunday in Portumna, Co Galway.
Castlebar athlete Angela O'Connor finished a creditable second in a good time of 39 minutes 2 seconds, maintaining her good recent form on the road racing scene. Hollymount's Josephine Macken, recovering from her efforts in the recent Belfast marathon, came home in fourth position, just 20 seconds behind third placed Galway's Jackie Forde.
The winner of the race was Ballina based Ann Moran, running in the colours of her county Clare home club Kilmuray, in an excellent time of 38 minutes 47 seconds, after a tough battle with O'Connor on a testing course.
Mayo A.C. club chairman, Balla's Brendan Conwell, was the sole club representative in the men's race, producing a solid run to finish well up in a competitive field.
The winner of the men's race was Galway international Gerry Ryan, in a time of 31 minutes 4 seconds, followed by former Ballina based Ian Egan, now running for Galway City Harriers, in second position.

Westport the venue for next fixture in Mayo A.C. Summer Running Series

Westport track will host the second fixture in the very successful Mayo A.C. Summer Running Series next Sunday, over a distance of 5,000 metres. The run commences at 3 p.m. and is open both to club runners and also those who are less interested in the competitive side.
Prior to the 5,000 metres, a 100 metre and 800 metre race will be held at approx. 2 p.m. incorporating the Mayo Senior Track Championships.
Club members extend sympathy to Breege Blehin from Moygownagh on the recent death of her mother, Brigid.
