Shane and Sweeney swing win
BY MICHAEL GALLAGHER

CILL TSEADHNA 2-09 CILL CHOMAIN 1-06
LOCAL bragging rights and a prized place in the finals of the national comortas tournament was on offer when these two age-old rivals clashed in bright sunshine in Cill Chomain on Sunday.

The home side went into the game as underdogs but they turned this assumption on its head and left themselves in a position to win the game going into the last 20 minutes. Then, Kiltane showed their senior pedigree and moved away from their neighbours thanks to a stream of clinical conversions as Shane Ó Loinseach led their attack impressively.

The home side had been very determined to win the county title on their home ground and tore into action from the outset. Mairtin Ó hOireachtaigh was in sparkling form and proved to be Cill Chomain’s main scoring threat.

His biggest contribution to the scoreboard arrived after just five minutes when Fintan Ó Rudaigh dropped a free in the Cill tSeadhna goalmouth and the lethal corner-forward was on hand to smash the leather beyond Eamon Ó Niallain.

The gave Cill Chomain a huge boost but Cill tSeadhna responded very quickly. Ó Loinseach was grounded in the goalmouth and Micheal Mac Suibhne planted the ensuing penalty in the bottom corner.

The Blue and Gold could have had another major just moments later when a flowing move involving Sean Ó Raghallaigh and Mac Suibhne sent Ultan Ó Corragain clean through but Ó Rudaigh produced a fantastic stop.

Jason Ó hEili’s dead-ball expertise ensured that the centre-half back landed two long range frees for the guests while Mac Suibhne and Loinseach also raised white flags before the interval.

At the other end Ó hOireachtaigh knocked over three points and Ó Rudaigh sent a 65yard free straight between the sticks to ensure that the sides were locked together 1-4 apiece at the break.

Cill Chomain had gone into the match without their injured talisman, Seamus Mac Andriu, but he was thrown into the fray early in the new half. Ó hOireachtaigh nudged the home side back in front with a well-taken point but Cill tSeadhna were beginning to buzz. They were picking up a lot of the breaks and Cill Chomain found it hard to move out of their own half as they faced into the wind.

Ó hEili balanced the scores with a well-hit free before his long delivery found Loinseach inside the opposition rearguard and the ace attacker slammed the ball to the net.

The home boys threw everything at their visitors in an effort to get back in the game but Ó hEili drove forward once more to extend the lead before Ó Loinseach twisted and turned and split the sticks to leave six between the teams, 2-8 to 1-5 with time ticking away.

Cill tSeadhna kept their foot on the gas and almost had another goal when a five man move sent Ó Loinseach through on goal and when he was pushed to the ground another penalty was awarded.

Mac Suibhne elected to tap the ball over the bar to secure the victory but Cill Chomain still had some fight left in them.

They swarmed downfield and were awarded a free in front of the posts. Derek Ó Morain blasted for the roof of the net but the leather cleared his intended target and skimmed the crossbar for the final action of the day.
