Second time lucky for Saints
By Sandra Coffey
MOUNT ST MICHAEL 0-11 GLENAMADDY CS 1-04 THEY probably should have won the provincial title in the original fixture but the young ladies from Mount St Michael made no mistake when emerging victorious from this replayed final last Tuesday.
While the scoreline showed a four point win at the final whistle this was an emphatic display by the Claremorris team who should have won by a greater margin.
Excellent teamplay by the forwards in particular was one of the highlights of the game. Finishing was at times a little off the mark but for the crowd present, there was always a feeling that the Claremorris ladies would eventually pull away from their Galway rivals.
Mount St Michael’s Aoife Hyland settled the nerves of her team by floating over a point in the opening minutes of the game. This was answered minutes later by a point from Glenamaddy’s Emer Fahy as both sides strove for supremacy.
Both sides had early goal opportunities saved but the deliveries coming from midfielders captain Sarah Tierney, who had a great game, and Stephanie Delaney ensured that there would be more opportunities for the Claremorris side.
Mount Saint Michael kept edging in front as the half progressed. This was helped by a great point from corner forward Laura Kelly. But shortly after, and just when the Claremorris side were getting into a stride, Glenamaddy put their stamp on the game as the Galway forward Tara Tully scored a goal.
This put the Claremorris ladies two points behind and Glenamaddy’s captain Eilish Gannon capitialised further by adding a point to her team’s tally. The scoreboard now read 1-3 to 0-3 in favour of Glenamaddy.
Aoife Hyland again showed her prowess as a forward and scored a point after a perfectly placed pass from team mate Laura Kelly for the Mayo girls and Mount St Michael’s free-taker, Rebecca Kean, who had started well by pointing some good frees, converted another important placed ball to bring her team within one point of Glenamaddy.
Mount captain, Sarah Tierney, looked to have scored a great goal in the top corner but Sligo referree Liam McDonagh had already blown the whistle and disallowed the score and so the half-time score had Glenamdaddy in front, 1-3 to 0-5.
The second half started briskly for Claremorris and a free edged them level with Glenamaddy in the opening minutes. Glen’s Emer Fahy had a chance of a goal that could have changed things early on, but the Claremorris team were happy to see the effort go wide after good pressure by the defence.
Excellent teamwork between Aoife Hyland, Sarah Tierney and Rebecca Kean showed again the determination of Mount St Michael’s but their efforts reaped no reward as Glenamaddy defended doggedly.
A point from Amy Bell and two from Rebecca Kean did, however, put their side three points up and the momentum was definitely with Claremorris as the half progressed.
At this stage they were providing a great display of will and their support play again was excellent as the match turned for home.
Glenamaddy’s Emer Fahy pointed a free and it looked like her side could edge back into the game but Claremorris held steady.
If the scoreline read differently, the Claremorris side would regret missing numerous chances that could have really sealed the game long before the final whistle.
Calls from the Claremorris crowd urged their team to keep the heads and more importantly keep the lead.
This they did with two more points and despite signs of a comeback from Glenamaddy, there was no stopping the final result which yielded a much deserved win for Mount St Michael.
