Tony turns to the minors
BY MICHAEL GALLAGHER

THE life of a football manager is certainly a busy one and when a man is in charge of two high-profile sides it becomes even more complicated.

Not that you’d know it when talking to Mayo minor manager, Tony Duffy. The Ballintubber man had just marshalled the St Louis Kiltimagh forces in last Saturday’s Connacht Colleges Senior ‘B’ football final when he suddenly had to change tack and answer queries about the opening round of the Connacht minor league, which sees Mayo face Roscommon in Ballyhaunis on Saturday next.

The hard-working bainisteoir was calm, precise and courteous as he put colleges disappointment to one side and projected forward to the challenges awaiting the Green and Red.

“Preparations have gone well. I was appointed a bit late so we were late starting, but with the Croke Park embargo on collective training until March 1, it didn’t make a lot of difference.

“All the colleges doing so well in the various competitions was also a bit of a distraction so we haven’t had a full panel at training yet, but having said that, we do have a good panel of players together and we’re looking forward to really getting stuck into the league.

“We’ll use it as a building and tryingout process for the championship. Our All-Ireland is on June 26 against Roscommon,” he added, before explaining that he’s delighted with the way clubs and players have responded to his management team.

“We’ve had an absolutely fantastic response from the clubs. They have been very positive. The players have been very positive and very gung-ho about what lies ahead. Anything I’ve asked them to do they’ve done it without any problem and I’m absolutely delighted with the response. We’re tryiing to push on together and be as positive as possible as we look to the future challenges. The quality of player is always superb in Mayo but it’s not all about quality either, it’s also about delivering on the big day and we’re trying to instill mental toughness and self belief into them,” he concluded.
