Derry dent hopes of below par hurlers
By Anthony Hennigan

DERRY 3-12 MAYO 1-07
MAYO’S hopes of contesting the play-off stages of their division took a nosedive on Sunday last, as the visiting Oak Leaf hurlers totally outclassed the home side at a sparsely populated McHale Park.

A goal in each half by Derry wingforward Paddy Henry and a third by Oisin McCloskey, from the rebound of his own penalty, accounted for the bulk of the eleven points that separated the teams at the final whistle.

Mayo could have no complaints about a result that was in no doubt long before the final whistle, though the withdrawal through injury of scoring machine Brian Moran when only five points separated the teams certainly didn’t help their cause.

Nor did losing from the side that started and won in Armagh a week earlier, full-back Kevin Moran and Eoghan Madigan to injuries, and Kenny Robinson and Sean Markham.

Mayo had hit the front on four separate occasions when Brian Moran’s four converted frees helped them into a 0-4 to 0-3 26th minute lead. However, the wheels started to loosen from the wagon in the minutes before the interval as at one end, Derry’s Paddy Henry booted a loose ball to the net and at the other, Kenny Feeney saw his goal effort stopped by the outstretched leg of ‘keeper Daryl McDermott.

Points by Henry, a free, Kevin Hinphey, Sean McNicholl and Mark Craig helped the visitors into a 1-4 to 0-4 half-time lead.

The newly introduced Niall Murphy pegged back a point for Mayo within two minutes of the restart but that was met by an emphatic response from Derry who rifled two goals and five points without interruption.

Ruairí Convery, twice from placed balls and once from play, Paddy McCloskey and Kevin Hinphey raised the white flags before Paddy Henry and Oisin McCloskey scored back-to-back goals in the 52nd and 57th minutes to leave the Ulster men 3-9 to 0-5 in front.

It might even have been worse for Mayo had Paddy McCloskey, fouled for the penalty that led to his brother Oisin’s goal, not earlier scooped over instead of into an open goal.

Keith Higgins, restricted in influence due to his placing at centre-back, did power forward to land one Mayo point, and both he and sub Kenny Robinson drew good saves from McDermott, but by the time Niall Murphy struck for a late consolation Mayo goal, Derry had strengthened their position further.

Points by Mark Craig, who like Higgins played in the football fixture the previous evening, Paddy McCloskey and Ruairí Convery rounded off a good day’s work for the White and Red, and left Mayo looking forlorn and beleaguered.

This was, after all, a Derry team already beaten by 10 points by a Kerry side Mayo lost to by one.

Quite such a gulf in class should not have existed.
