Ladies take a tumble

MONAGHAN 0-17 MAYO 1-09
MAYO crashed to their second league defeat of the season when they were outscored by a much slicker home team on Sunday last.

Monaghan are enjoying a fine season and went into their clash with Mayo undefeated and well-placed in the league table.

The Connacht ladies went north with two wins and one defeat to their name knowing that victory over the Ulster girls would take them to the top of the table, but all such thoughts were banished by the result.

The Green and Red were backed by a stiff breeze in the opening half but couldn’t make that advantage tell and went to the dressingrooms at the break trailing 0-6 to 0-8.

Once again Cora Staunton was the main score-getter for Mayo but Monaghan were winning most of the battles around the pitch and their two-point lead was well-deserved.

That superiority was reflected in the ease with which Monaghan pulled clear after the break. They knocked over a stream of points from the impressive Ciara McAnespie, Niamh Kindlon and Catriona McConnell as Mayo found it hard to cope with the White and Blue waves of attackers.

Staunton was marked by Yvonne Connell in the second period and she stifled the Mayo ace with some fine defensive work. Mayo found scores almost impossible to come by in the second half and Monaghan were 0-17 to 0-7 clear with just five minutes left.

Mayo managed to put respectability on the scoreboard in the final run-in when Clodagh Martin rattled in a goal and Staunton kicked two points, but there was no doubt that Monaghan were clear and deserving winners.

MAYO: Yvonne Byrne; Kathryn Sullivan, Martha Carter, Michelle Corbett; Lisa Cafferky, Aileen Gilroy (0-1), Sinead Hughes; Claire Egan, Fiona McHale; Sinead Cafferky, Cora Staunton (0-8), Lisa Tully; Kathy Walsh, Clodagh Martin (1-0), Ciara Hanahoe. Sub: Jessie Coleman.
