Managers ‘pool’ their talents
The worlds of GAA and soccer will meet when mayo boss John O’Mahony and former Liverpool supermo Roy Evans both address a sport team management conference in Dublin next month.
JOHN O’Mahony will be among a trio of All-Ireland winning football managers to speak at the ‘Sports Team Management and Administration Conference’ which takes place in the City West Hotel on Saturday, February 20. O’Mahony will be joined by Kerry boss Jack O’Connor and Down legend Pete McGrath and expertise from across the water will be on hand also, such as former Liverpool FC manager Roy Evans and John Deehan, a former player with Aston Villa, Norwich City and Wigan Athletic.
Providing an insight into the workings of the legendary Anfield Boot room, Evans should prove an exceptionally interesting speaker. He brings with him a wealth of coaching knowledge given his vast experience of working with some of the great figures of English football such as Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Kenny Daglish.
The event is designed to give managers and club administration officers of all levels across the country the opportunity to learn from the top names in coaching. And among other key sporting figures to join the impressive list of speakers are Kilkenny hurling boss Brian Cody and Peter Quinn, former President of the GAA, along with Steve Aboud (IRFU Technical Development Manager), Prof Aidan Moran (former official psychologist to the Irish Olympic Squad), Dr Liam Hennessy (IRFU Director of Fitness), Gerry Fitzpatrick (former Irish international basketball manager and coach in America), Bart McEnroe (Mentors coach) and Gary Keegan (High Performance manager of IIS and former High Performance Manager in boxing).
This conference follows on from the very successful ‘Preparing to Perform’ conference that was held in July of last year and is devoted to the education and development of managers and management skills. For the administrators there will be speakers on club development, future growth involving the community and sourcing and completing grant allocation.
The conference is one of three being organised this year and will be followed by ‘Multi-sports Preparing to Perform on April 24 and ‘Coaching Kids in Sports’ on November 6.
For daily updates on speakers, log on to www.sporttracker.ie. Registration begins at 8.30am and the conference will finish at 5pm. Tickets are priced at €75 and are available on www.sporttracker. ie or by contacting Sporttracker on 042-93-24504.
