Ballina seconds on song at home

BALLINA 15 BALLINROBE 0
BALLINA Seconds made it three wins in a row with a hard fought home victory over Ballinrobe.

The visitors started the stronger and pinned Ballina in their half for the first 10 minutes, however, a strong run from a quickly taken penalty by scrum-half Philip Thornton finally got Ballina down into the Ballinrobe 22.

Ballina had the better of a physically bigger Ballinrobe pack in the scrums and made this pay off for their first score. Stephen Dolan picked from the back of a solid scrum and passed to Thornton who touched down after 20 minutes.

5-0 at half-time left it delicately balanced and the job far from over. But there was no drop in workrate.

The scrum remained a good source of quality possession with several balls taken against the head, but the lineout also was a good source of ball with Stephen Dolan at No.2 and Henry Hewson at No.4 securing most of their own ball and some of the opposition’s also.

Ballina used this possession well with several excellent rolling mauls, however, it was out wide that their next score came with John Clarke winning the chase to the left corner to touch down a kick ahead on 25 minutes. It was his first ever try since joining Ballina this year.

Two minutes later Alistair Browne, five years after joining Ballina RFC, scored his first ever try for the club too, with a pick and go from a close ruck. His celebration was something to behold.

While the scores were satisfying the defensive effort was even more so. Many times Ballinrobe came close to the Ballina line but the Greens were not going to allow their line to be crossed. Time and again they put in the tackles and kept the slate clean.
