National crown sits well with coach Corbett
BY CRÓNA ESLER

ONE of Mayo’s best known GAA Gaels has been honoured with a national award for his voluntary commitment to Irish sport.

Jimmy Corbett, who established Carnacon Ladies GAA Club in 1986 when ladies Gaelic football was in its infancy, was one of 12 people to receive an award nationally.

He received the accolade for adult manager of the Year at a ceremony in Dublin on Wednesday last, February 24.

A full-time farmer, Jimmy has given a great deal to both club and county. Since the formation of Carnacon Ladies GAA, the club has progressed to win numerous underage and senior county titles, not to mention three All-Ireland senior titles in 2002, 2007 and 2008. Throughout it all, Jimmy has been to the forefront of all these successes.

In addition to his work with Carnacon, Jimmy also finds time to promote ladies Gaelic football across the county. Over a period of 23 years, he has served both as PRO and Development Officer of the Mayo Ladies County Board and this year was appointed President. His enthusiasm for ladies football is unrelenting.

The National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport is an initiative of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in conjunction with the Federation of Irish Sports, which represents some 68 sports in Ireland. The scheme is supported by Setanta Sports, Servasport, the Community Foundation and the Irish Sports Council. This is the second time for the awards to be presented they were previously presented in 2007.

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr Martin Cullen TD, presented Jimmy with the National Award. “In an age where time and community spirit are both valuable commodities, the commitment, generosity and contribution of these volunteers to our local communities and to Irish society deserve recognition.

The chosen winners represent a wide group of people who have given their time, not for recognition or for reward, but in a spirit of true generosity. I hope that the awards will also provide additional encouragement to other volunteers and reach out to inspire new volunteers for the future,” said the Minister.
