Promotion is priority says boss Brennan
TO have his team play National League hurling next season against the likes of Wexford, Offaly and Antrim, that remains the ambition of Mayo manager Martin Brennan despite Sunday’s defeat of his side in their first outing of the 2010 campaign, writes Anthony Hennigan.
John Meyler’s visiting Kerry men, inspired by 12-point man Shane Brick, recorded their second straight win, if only by the narrowest of margins (1-18 to 214). But it was that previous week’s outing to Derry that stood to the Munster men, believes Brennan. His own team’s postponed opening round fixture in Armagh has been re-fixed for next Saturday.
“That was really the difference. If our free-taking was that little bit more consistent we could have got a draw or even have won the game but I have to be honest and say that Kerry were that bit sharper, they were first to the ball and their touch was that little bit crisper than ours.
“I asked for a performance more than a result. I wanted to see a serious performance because I’m still rating Kerry and ourselves as the two best teams in the division. In saying that, it’s going to be hard to go and get a win out of Crossmaglen next Saturday. It’s a devil having to go back up,” says the Westport man, who knows his side can ill afford another slip up.
“It’s a huge chance for us to get up to Division 2 and play against some of the big boys. It’s a serious possibility. But we’ll have to beat that Kerry team because more than likely they’ll go on and beat what’s in this division.
“It would be great to think that Kerry and ourselves could be in the league final because then you’ve no break, you’re straight into championship three weeks after. That would be the goal, to stay in the closing stages of the league, it would be great preparation for the Christy Ring,” he admits.
