Mix-up over Mark appeal
BY ANTHONY HENNIGAN

MAYO will seek to have Mark Ronaldson’s four-week suspension overturned, probably this Thursday night, after an administrative mix-up prevented both player and county board representatives from attending an appeal hearing in Croke Park last Tuesday.

Time is now of the essence for the Shrule/Glencorrib man because if it isn’t possible for his appeal to be heard before next Sunday’s meeting with Dublin, he runs the risk of missing all three of Mayo’s National League fixtures in March.

If the appeal hearing was fixed for next week instead, Ronaldson would be eligible to play against the Dubs, but then if his suspension was subsequently upheld, the four week ban would kick in from after the Dublin match – ruling him out of away games in Derry and Kerry and the home clash with Monaghan.

If, however, his appeal is heard later this week, even if unsuccessful, he would miss Mayo’s games against Dublin and Derry but would have served his suspension by the time Mayo visit the Kingdom in Round 6 on Sunday March 21. The corner-forward was handed his ban retrospectively, after an incident in last Sunday fortnight’s Division 1 visit to Omagh.

“We’d hope there’s a chance it could be overturned,” is as far as Mayo manager John O’Mahony was willing to be drawn on the issue. Ronaldson’s club-mate, Trevor Mortimer, is available for selection next Sunday as a four-week suspension dating back to Mayo’s league opener against Galway runs out on Saturday night.

O’Mahony this week welcomed the younger Mortimer, Conor, and another 2006 All Star, Alan Dillon, back into the county fold following the duo’s winter world travels. The pair trained with the squad last Thursday and again over the weekend.

“They did a fair bit of work when they were away, especially with our gym programme that they followed, but it’ll take a few weeks to get the match fitness back,” said Johnno, noncommittal on whether either or both are in his match day plans for Sunday.

“We’ll make that decision later in the week. The Dublin game will probably come a bit soon but you never rule anything out, we’ll see how the week goes.”
