Late Loftus goal flatters ‘Robe
By Billy Horan

BALLINROBE 3-12 GARRYMORE 2-6
A SPRIGHTLY Ballinrobe side decisively disposed of the Garrymore challenge in this second round fixture under lights at Flanagan Park, on Saturday night.

Regular players were missing from both sides as the respective managers gave others the opportunity of displaying their capabilities. Ballinrobe derived the greater benefit from the exercise, though Garrymore did manage to get on level terms through the medium of a brace of goals in the third quarter. The locals, however, responded to the threat and surged ahead again.

Garrymore’s John McHugh, from an acute angle, and Sean Burke exchanged points in the opening five mintues. Shane Owens powering his way upfield from his defensive berth linked up with Sean Burke, whose delivery to Declan Reilly yielded a Ballinrobe goal in the 17th minute.

Well taken points by Mark Walkin and Declan Reilly followed in the wake of that goal, leaving Garrymore lagging behind by 1-3 to 0-1, at the 14th minute. The visitors, not as well served up front as their opponents, countered with a Jimmy Killeen point from a free, as the action entered the second quarter.

Ballinrobe bettered their position through points from Sean Burke, Shane Owens (making another run upfield) and Kevin Keane, at the sole Garrymore response was another Jimmy Killeen point (from play on this occasion), creating a favourable Ballinrobe interval scoreline of 1-6 tto 0-3.

Anthony Jordan, placed by Brian Lynskey, kicked Garrymore’s fourth point a minute into the second half. The upright fustrated Sean Burke’s bid for a second Ballinrobe goal in the 33rd minute, before his team-mate, full-back David McDonnell, availing of a free by Declan Reilly, pointed in the 36th minute.

Just when it seamed as if matters were slipping from Garrymore’s grasp, they bounced back unexpectedly. David Dolan and Brian Lynskey were the contributors to a move, which rendered a Brian Walsh goal in the 39th minute.

Inside a minute, the umpire was signalling a second Garrymore goal, with David Dolan executing the score on this occasion.

Parity now obtained, Ballinrobe 1-7, Garrymore 2-4, but is was of short duration, as Sean Burke, gaining possession from Mark Walkin, countered with a Ballinrobe goal in the 41st minute.

Points followed from half-back Shane Biggins, Mark Walkin (free) aand Kevin Keane, while defender David Daly kicked a fine point for Garrymore, augmented by one from a free by Jimmy Killeen.

Substitute Ivor Loftus, not long involved in the action, made Ballinrobe’s position secure when he put the finishing touch to enterprising play by Sean Burke, for a third home goal in the 56th minute.

Further points from Sean Burke and Mark Walkin (free) widened the margin between the sides.

Sean Burke, very much at the heart of every attacking movement, energetic Shane Owens, Shane Biggins, Mark Walkin, Declan Reilly, David McDonnell and Kevin Keane performed creditably for Ballinrobe. David Dolan, Tony Corcoran, David Daly, Trevor Nally, Brian Lynskey and Jimmy Killeen did their utmost to keep Garrymore in conention.
